Text messages always coming in separate threads??

I got this Galaxy S7 for free from Tmobile with a cool deal they had going on. After a week, it started acting up but only in one area.
Every time I text my husband or my mom (it doesn't do it to any other contacts), their responses come in on separate threads. The thread will be labeled something like "John, Me (2)" as if it's a group chat.
I've spent days on google looking for a solution but no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop this happening.

I cleared the App's cache, deleted all texts, reset my phone, factory reset my phone... No cigar.

Anyone know any solutions or what could be going on?

Also both parties are using the original Messenger app, not a third party app.

I don't have a Samsung in front of me to look at the messaging options. On my Motorola, there's an option in the app itself. Open Messaging, then look for a settings button or three vertical dots (as on the Chrome app). There, look for the Group Messaging setting. This web site has a lot more to offer than a probably setting option. Hope it helps.

None of the problems listed are really what I'm dealing with... but putting my phone into safe mode has seemed to help for a few texts but then it started up again.

My group chat setting is off, too. -_-
