Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
In the week before the update to N hit my US Cellular phone, I had 2 nights when the phone went from 60% down to 0% overnight. Then 2 nights of good performance, and another night of full drain. Did a cache wipe, and things then seemed to be OK. Then got the N update on a Thursday. Phone OK on Friday, but on Saturday got very hot and was quickly draining the battery. Did another cache wipe. Sunday went well, and Monday was at 90% at the end of my work day. Yesterday (Tuesday), went from 100% at 7:30AM to 40% at 11AM. Charged up to 100%, and by the time I left work was already at 56% again. When it drains like this, the phone gets quite warm. Did another cache wipe last night, and overnight went from 70% down to 50%. I know people have said to give the phone a chance to adjust to Nougat, just now sure how long to give and how many cache wipes to do before caving and doing a full factory reset. And then how long to give that to see how it worked before caving and bringing the phone back to the US Cellular store to see what they'll do. Just got this phone the day after US Thanksgiving in 2016, so still under warranty (I think).
I have a bunch of screen shots, but only from the built in battery monitor. Will post some, but don't want to clog up the listing unnecessarily with all of them.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Did you install any new apps or, by chance, notice any app updates just before this started happening?
Try this and see if it might help. Go to settings > device maintenance > storage > internal storage > cached data > CLEAR.

LineKill, thanks for your reply. Since I had just updated to N, many apps have been updating as well. Not always linked to any of the battery issues (at least their updating, maybe not the new updated version). No new apps have been installed in the week prior to the N update or in the last week. No issues today, took phone off charger at 7:30AM and 100% and right now at 6:30PM it's sitting at 61% with no interim charging. No change in how the phone was used or kept at work during the day (and actually used it to take 5 pictures this morning which were uploaded once I got to my work wifi).
I did do the cached data clear you mentioned, but didn't see your note until after 12:30PM. How does that differ from a cache wipe?
Will continue to monitor the battery. Attaching current screenshot of battery details from today.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Anytime my friend!
Wiping the cache partition clears the cache for the system. The system cache can become corrupted causing the system to misbehave and in turn causing battery drain. Wiping the cache partition, especially after a system upgrade, can help correct a lot of problems.
Clearing cached data clears the cache for apps. It is typically used to help correct a misbehaving app. Since a misbehaving app can cause battery drain, clearing its cache can help as well. You do not need to clear the cached data frequently though as doing so can cause battery drain itself.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Another thing I've started seeing is that my s7 takes longer to fast charge. This morning was at 18%. On charger at 445am. At 730am only at 95%. Again erratic. Some days charges quickly. Unsure why it wouldn't be consistent.
Weds battery did well. Yesterday dropped to 40% by 11am. Did another cache wipe. Many apps still updating.
-
Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
It is not normal for you to have keep wiping the cache to keep your battery drainage down. Since you are experiencing other issues you might want to consider..... Um...... Err.....A factory reset.
-
Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
So trying to avoid that. Today's a good day. 4.5 hrs and 85%. I think I'll give it a few more days b4 doing what might be inevitable.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
is it advisable to remove my SD card before going into doing a factory reset?

You will have some people tell you no, because it does not do anything to your SD card, and they would be correct.
I am going to tell you yes, remove it. Sometimes there is an option to erase external data and if you accidentally have that checked, poof! Also, there is the simple fact of sh*t happens.
It is a lot more difficult to restore, sometimes impossible, that precious data you may have stored on your SD card.
BTW, I never remove my SD card when restoring, I like to live life on the edge. Plus I am too lazy. However, I do have my entire SD card backed up into the cloud for various reasonsツ

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
LineKill, thanks ... guess I'll use it as an opportunity to put in a larger card (have a 128GB to put in, replacing a 64GB in it right now). Sure hope the FDR helps!

You're quite welcome my friend!
I do too man! I will keep my fingers crossed🤞
If at all possible, do not restore anything. Just let your Google & Samsung accounts populate everything after the reset. Install your apps from scratch and just copy over any media & documents you may have backed up. This will provide you with the best possible user experience after everything is said and done.

Went through the FDR last night, and have been slowly reinstalling apps. Did put in a new 128GB card to replace the 64GB one I initially bought. It was recognized just fine. So far, seems to be doing OK (knock wood). After 10 hrs 34 min had gone from 100% to 72%. One data point is too soon to call, but is encouraging.

Looking good so far👀
There is really no hurry in installing apps. I believe installing them as needed is a good method. That way if you install an app that does not play nice it is easier to detect.

LineKill, thanks so much for your support and comments during this process. I have a long list of apps that I've not installed and may not install again. Have done those that I definitely use on a daily or weekly or monthly basis. Others can reside on my tablet and don't need to be on my phone. Or can wait until things like March Madness roll around again. Today will be an interesting day as I return to work and see how the phone does compared to last week's issues.

For 2 days now since the FDR things seem to be going well. Here's the report from this morning shortly after putting on the charger at 32%. Still going to monitor just in case. Want to address battery issues while the phone is still under warranty.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
All has been going well since the FDR until overnight had a battery drop while I was sleeping and the phone was idle and laying with screen down (I think it helps the AOD think it's in a bag so used to help with battery life). Hoping this isn't the start of battery issues again. I did forget to do the phone optimization prior to going to sleep, so not sure if that helped cause the problem. Lots of apps involved on the phone overnight. Android System the worst offender again. Not sure why BT was at 9%, since it's not even turned on. Any thoughts?

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Hi CWinkler,
That is a pretty severe drop. Just let it go for another day and do what you normally do and see what happens.
One thing you can do though is go into settings > connections > location > improve accuracy and turn off WiFi scanning and Bluetooth scanning.

Turned off nearby device scanning for now. Will keep watching. If needs be take phone back to US Cellular while under warranty. Weird that it should do that. Also did a cache wipe since might've gotten messed up with all the app re-installing.

Wiping the cache at this point was a good idea. I am thinking there is an app that is behaving badly. If it continues I have a couple more things you can try.
Even though I do not think it is the phone itself, having it replaced under warranty might not be a bad idea, it would definitely eliminate that component of the issue.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Well, LineKill, yesterday evening while at a social function, phone dropped to 30+% and was quite hot. Got home and charged it up to 60% before going to bed. Got up this morning and it had dropped to 6%. Short of calling US Cellular tech support to see if they'll authorize a new S7, what other suggestions might you have? I really hate having to compromise how I use the phone (like turning off WiFi location services or GPS) when I never had to do that before. It's so odd that somes days will be great and others not. And it's always hot when it happens. After the Note 7 battery, have to admit I'm a bit leary. Always had Motorola phones, starting to question the wisdom of switching to Samsung.
Screen shots attached from last night and this morning. Android System continues to be the culprit. Expanded list of what's in it is the last screenshot.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
It started before Nougat, so it cannot be that. It happens very randomly, so it cannot be...Sorry, telling you what it isn't will not help you at this point.
I understand your frustration. I agree, you should not have to turn off anything. What you did turn off was only temporary for troubleshooting. Without the phone in my hand I am kind of working in the dark.
If you have an SD card installed, take it out, it could be failing. You can boot into safe mode to see if it is an installed app
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-28008, however, you would have to be in safe mode for a while to find out anything since it is so random.
I certainly do not know everything and there are people on here that I am sure are more knowledgeable than I am. So, if anyone has any experience with this particular issue, please chime in!
Calling US Cellular does not sound like a bad idea.
I am at a loss and have no more ideas CWinkler. I am sorry I couldn't help you. I will let you decide on what you want to do from here. I am not going anywhere, so if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
called US Cellular, and rather than jumping into getting a replacement refurbished phone we decided to first try a new SIM card - then if there are still issues she suggested removing the SD card (but since this has happened with 2 different cards in hard to think it's the card itself) ... and then if there are still issues then go the replacement route. Under warranty until 25 November 2017

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
SIM was changed on Saturday 6th May. All was going well until this morning, 10th, when phone was down to 2% at 04:30. Seems like I get 2-3 good days and then all goes awry again. Unsure what either of the 2 different SD cards might have to do with any of this, so not sure whether it makes sense to take the SD card out and see what happens ... or just have US Cellular start the process to get a replacement phone. Plan to call my US Cellular store today to see if I have to make the 45 minute drive to start that process, or if it can be done over the phone. Hopefully the person I've been working with there is working today.
Photos show the morning status (not on charger during night), before bed status and where there was a large dip the details from the Android system. Didn't get that right away this morning since I needed to get the phone on the charging pad. So the last 2 screenshots are the Android System details from this morning.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Hmm, interesting🤔 It is more than likely not the SD card itself, but could possibly be data that you had restored onto the card after the FDR.
I really don't know what to say at this point accept that this really sucks and I feel for your misery.
If this happens on your replacement phone I won't even know what to think. We will work it out though with a little, err a lot, of patienceツ

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Talked to my US Cellular guy, and will let GSam monitor battery issues while he's off on vacation (back on 22nd May). That should still give me time to have a 'new' phone sent to me and set up before Memorial Day holiday (fingers crossed). Or I'll live with what I have until the holiday is over (have plans to be away the weekend before). At this time leaving the SD card in the slot. Charging the phone up to 100% right now so that it has a good chance to still be alive in the morning. At 60% after a day at work and with GSam monitoring things. Also downloaded and did the ADB thing to get at the additional information about apps sucking the battery. If nothing else, will be information for others having similar issues (as I know that unfortunately I'm not alone).

Unfortunately, didn't have to wait long to get GSam stats on my phone. Went from 63% Thursday evening to 3% this morning when I got up. Attaching screen shots from GSam. If my US Cellular guy is working today, looking like I might as well start the process of getting a replacement phone rather than wait another week.
If anyone has any ideas from these screenshots, very interested in hearing them. Have already done a Factory Reset and multiple Cache Wipes.

UPDATE: received 'new to me' phone from US Cellular yesterday. Used Smart Switch to transfer information (for better or worse, what the US Cellular person recommended). Still in the process of resetting the phone to get it to how I'd like, and fingers are crossed that I don't see similar battery issues. Did have to update to N after the phone went through all the setup stuff. Did a cache wipe after all the updating was done.
Attaching GSam screenshots from my first night. Phone was about 90% when I called it a night.

Well, phone woke me up at 3:53AM beeping because it wanted to be connected to the charger (was at 11% from 44% when I went to sleep). I'm kicking myself for doing the restore instead of installing everything from scratch, and am thinking I'll do a FDR this weekend just to give the phone a clean chance to perform well. Or should I not expect to get a full day's worth of phone out of a charge? I make very few calls, some texts mid-day. Don't even use it at lunch to do emails - use my tablet. And connected to WiFi all day at work.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Nougat has tripled battery drain on my Galaxy S6. My biggest draw is Idle, followed by Android system. I have 6 apps, mostly for backup/restore, disabling packages, etc. Disabling the apps or deinstalling is useless. Safe mode (same thing) is useless. Ditto for wifi on or off, bluetooth, and even cell service. I turn my phone to exclude LTE, allow only GSM. I get no service, but still have the same battery suckage. Ultra power saving mode is useless and lies. It says 110 hours remaining while the phone is draining 3% per hour. The only cure is airplane mode. Prior to nougat my phone drained 1% per hour sitting on my desk doing nothing.
I have all the supers things people mention: clearing cache, factory reset, etc. The factory reset was especially painful since I didn't save my contacts (saved pix and messages). After I typed my contacts, Google decided to sync up with the empty contacts list it helpfully stored after the factory reset. So I lost them again, but before typing them again I installed a contacts saver app.
The Sprint people said on their forum that I should go to the Sprint store, but have no clue what the Sprint store will do when I ask the,. The "grand masters" on that forum don't bother to read what I wrote and suggest going into safe mode because my apps are bad. Doesn't matter how many times I have mentioned doing safe mode, or "ultra" power saving which also disables all my apps.

Wow, @Eric Peterson8, so sorry! You're making me feel much better about how my 'new' phone is behaving. But still think I need to try the FDR route, and wish I had started this phone out that way instead of taking the 'easy way out' and copying over phones. I wondered when all my apps installed and updated prior to the phone updating from M to N. But by then it was too late.
I sure hope you get your battery issues sorted out soon. Best of Luck

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Well, since you're doing a Factory Reset anyway, I'd say go that route but DON'T restore any apps yet. I know, it'll be painful, but other than Safe Mode and manually activating each app, this is the best way to do it. See how your phone behaves after a Factory Reset and no apps. That's your 'fresh state' picture. Then after a night's full charge, start adding your most used apps (if you can hold off on your not-so-common apps, I'd do that for now). See how it behaves. If the problem comes back, the list of apps you've installed lately is shorter and a lot easier to troubleshoot.
Also, from your pictures, your cell reception is really low, so I'd suggest either trying WiFi calling if available or making sure that your router isn't rebooting at night or losing connection in the middle of the night (something that I experienced a lot with Cox at usually 1 or 2 AM every day).
I'd also check Sync/backup settings for data-intensive services, like Photo back ups, Samsung cloud, etc. that might be backing things up when on WiFi and at night. If your SD Card is corrupted or the reader is beginning to fail, that will also drain your battery, so keeping your phone card-free for a few days is also a good idea.
And another thing I'd recommend is that after your phone has been set up initially and all updates installed, go to your Application Manager, show system apps, find Google Play Services, uninstall updates, and let it re-update itself.
Remember, it does take a couple days for your phone to 'settle' after a factory reset, but this should be speedier if you don't load all your apps at once at the beginning.

@SpookDroid, thanks! I've done the FDR without SD card. Other than Google, Samsung and MS accounts have only installed LastPass. Can't do anything about cell reception or WiFi cutting out, I live on a boat in a pretty remote area with limited reception. Motorola phones were usually OK, this is my 1st (now 2nd) Samsung. No control over CenturyLink router issues. I have an extender on my boat to boost the WiFi signal, but sometimes that even has issues. Will hold off as long as possible on reloading apps, and be methodical with those I install and timing. Will probably also put GSam on tonight, just so I have a track record of things.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
If you do get that installed and running, if you feel your phone getting too hot, open the report and see what has your CPU in use or a wakelock active. That should help narrow down the culprit(s).

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
I know you don't have a lot of control there, but damn that's bad reception! Also, see that exclamation mark on your WiFi icon? That means the network does have connectivity issues, so the phone is struggling to get data in/out, which is a very big battery drain (it's like having a 2-hour conversation whispering VS shouting... the latter will have your pipes sore by the end of it).

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
@SpookDroid and @LineKill, yes, we're kinda at the end of the road to nowhere (but it's a beautiful spot on the water) pretty far from cell towers. So reception isn't the greatest, or WiFi, even though sometimes I do see 4G. But at my shop, I'm closer to the cell tower (but in a metal building) and we have Time Warner digital WiFi so things should be better. Attaching screen shots from today at work, and they don't look all that different. Let me know what you think, and if I'm fooling myself that the phone should last longer. What gets me is that for 4 months I was having GREAT battery life, then in one week had 2 nights in a row of phone dead in the morning and it's gone downhill since. And updating from M to N hasn't seemed to change anything.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Have you noticed high battery drain at any location other than at home?
-
Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
@LineKill, the latest screenshots were from work, and I have had instances where the old phone would go from 100% at 7:30AM and would be down to 40% by 11AM at work, and it would be really hot. Haven't had this phone long enough to know any of that. The old phone would also get hot and drain when it was in my fanny pack, when it should've been off because of Smart Screen or whatever it is that is supposed to keep the phone off if it thinks it's in a bag. I have intentionally NOT put the phone on the FastCharge puck overnight, but if that's not an issue for the phone then I can put it on the charger each night 'just in case'. What do you think? Would that kill my battery life from overcharging?

Just discovered that "keep screen turned off" was turned off, so having phone screen-side down wouldn't have helped.

If you are concerned about your battery degrading from leaving it on the charger overnight turn off fast charging, you really don't need it overnight.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
What I really don't understand is why the phone had no issues staying off the charger overnight for the first 4 months I owned it. Then all of a sudden it started having issues. Makes me wonder if US Cellular may have a tower issue? Not sure how to check that out.

Personally, I think it would be more so your cell reception rather than WiFi. Maybe your carrier had some changes with their network right before all this started happening.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
I'm going to call my guy at the USCC store tomorrow when he's back from vacation, and see if there's any way for them to check that out. Started mid-April. I've also asked others in the town (via FB page) whether they've noticed any recent issues. Would be good to have more data. I know I missed 2 calls last night, and phone was 'searching for service'.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Update: called US Cellular and talked to their Tech Support and Roaming people (phone ended up roaming yesterday). Advised them that there were issues down here with signal strength since mid-April, and they said they'd escalate the issue to engineering since it's gone on for some time (nobody had reported it ... so I'd advise others to be sure to speak up to your carrier). Hopefully they'll find something that they can fix to improve our service. In the meantime, making sure that my phone has what I think is enough charge to get through the night. So far so good, if 3 nights can tell you anything.
Thanks go out to @LineKill and @SpookDroid for their help with my issues.

Hey, your last set of screen shots showed your system in a dark mode of sorts. How did you do that? Was it an app?

@teslas, changed my theme to "metallic dark touchwiz" ... free Samsung theme. Like it much better, and fonts and colors are much easier to read than with the other theme I had been using

Just be careful with older themes, though. They might look good...until you hit certain elements of the UI that were changed from dark to light on the Nougat update and that text/elements will 'disappear'.

@SpookDroid, this theme was available after updating to Nougat ... are you saying it might have issues I don't know about? I know the Sunset theme I selected after my update (from the phone not Play Store, same as this metallic dark) had issues with font disappearing into the background. For now this is working OK for me. Figured it was Nougat compatible

Most themes are available, but if they were created BEFORE the update and haven't been, well, updated, there MIGHT be elements that used to be a dark color but now are light and might be 'lost' in light background elements.

@CWinkler thanks the theme works. Is it possible to select my own wallpaper in this theme? I lost it after activation of the theme.

@teslas, not sure to be honest - I just use the theme as is. Maybe others will be able to answer your question. Might want to start another thread to ask, so you get better responses.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Update: 'new' phone has been working pretty well. Last night decided to not charge it up to 100% before bed, so it was at 60% when I called it a night. 48% this morning. Battery doesn't get hot like in the previous phone (knock wood). Still have pretty spotty reception, and need to call US Cellular today to see if they've learned anything about signal strength down here. Had the roaming signal again yesterday.

You should be able to, but since the theme comes with wallpapers and everything, once you apply it, the wallpaper included will 'take over'. Simply find the wallpaper you want back and re-apply it as your wallpaper. Note that every time you apply a theme, if it includes a wallpaper, the included one will be applied, but once it's been applied to your phone, you're free to change wallpapers and icon themes.

Re: Erratic battery the week before and now since upgrading to Nougat
Update: US Cellular still working on signal strength issues but after talking with tech yesterday, not too hopeful that it'll get better. The tech did have me check on my phone's MIN, and he found an issue there, so did an update. I'm to keep an eye on the roaming issue and let them know if I continue to see my phone go into roam mode. I also learned that 4G capable phones are designed to automatically update their tower / roaming information, so there's no need to do the *228 update, which I had been doing every month. He did suggest maybe a weekly, or at least monthly, power down using volume down and power (said it's like removing the battery and putting it back in). Hadn't been doing that. So I keep learning, which is a good thing.
There's one tower servicing our area, with 3 'cones / beacons / whatever they're called' pointed in different directions to broadcast the signal. They are supposed to reach up to 5 miles. My boat is on the far side of that range, as noted in the attachment with the blue circle. Found this website, didn't know it existed: Oriental, NC Cell Towers, Signal Map & Lease Rates | CellReception
US Cellular isn't even shown as one of their "top 4", not surprising. From reading some of the reviews, thinking I shouldn't feel too bad about my service :(

Woke up this morning to a dead phone ... and it had been working so well! Got the debug chart from GSam, hoping that it means something to you either @LineKill or @SpookDroid. Also attaching the chart from the built in battery monitor since it shows the nosedive. No temperature information unless it's hidden in the GSam information. I know US Cellular is still working on the signal strength issue. Do you see anything else in here that tells us anything?
