I notice if I want to install swype or flex t9 (two keyboard options) that I need to give them permissions that have nothing to do with their functionality. Is there anything I can do about this, or do I have to give them permission no matter what?

Phone ID is just to tie it to whichever device you're currently using, Nexus, Evo, etc.

Contacts is for autocomplete when you're entering names for texts, emails, etc.

If you want to use any app, you either accept the permissions so you can use it or don't and you can't use it. You can't accept only part of the permissions for each app.
