Unroot and go to stock or not

I just bought a pretty new Nexus S 4g this week from a guy that didn't back up the stock rom and had cyanogen and MIUI rom on it.
I've been okay pleased with the phone-but there have been some connectivity issues that I'm wondering if are the network or the phone.

Today, 8/7/2011- what is the best rom for this phone and is there any advantage for a lay person (I can figure it out) to flash back to OEM?

Sometimes it seems like there is just plain ole crap going on with Sprint's network and it is not actually the phones!

Also, because I'm not completely techno-geek (but can get by), if someone is running a stable Cyanogen mod and are rooted- do you receive the notice of sprint's next update?
Thanks for your reply.

You can always go back to stock so that it's fresh and then you can re-root if you want. It's a good learning experience.
