I personally can't understand whats wrong with the invite system, except, that maybe you feel more special when you get past 2mil people queue to get a phone 
Also having to cope with invite system is good for your social health, because you can get invites in forums and different places all over the internet, you speak to many people then even more people when it turns out that previous ones have given away their invites. Some are selling invites, so they learn to trade and sell goods. You can even make some friends trying to get an invite. Also, again, phone becomes kind of trophy telling that you participated in international get-a-oneplus-race
