2.2 Froyo Update - Report & Find Solutions to Issues Here (post #1 & 2 updated 8/8)

Google Calendar Issue since Android 2.2

Since I upgraded to the Android 2.2 (Ver. 3.26.651.6), my Google Calendar does not sync "Contacts Birthdays and Events" calendar anymore. All my other subscribed Google calendars are perfectly sync'd on Google Calendar on PC and my Evo. Interestingly enough, whatever Birthdays and Events that were on my phone before the upgrade are still there. It's only new additions to that calendar. I've tried adding birthdays in Contacts (on the Evo and PC). All additions show up immediately on the Google Calendar on the PC but calendar on Evo is not updating. I've already tried to unsubscribe and then subscribe again. Anyone else having this issue?

btw 2.2 is a god damn joke.

what carrier in they-re right mind enables EVERY program to start when the phone starts?

doesnt this phone have 500 some mb of ram? well after startup with all the CRAP bloatware there is only 150mb left...

wtf.

You don't have "150 left". The most efficient way to use memory is to store as much as you can in the total amount available to you (with some reserves), and then free it as necessary. If the OS crashed, because it ran out of memory, that would be one thing. But you'll notice that it never does. That's because Android is intelligent enough to clean out stuff that hasn't been used in a while to make room for something that is. Imagine if we went to a doctor every 15 minutes and had our memories erased just for the sake of keeping as much space as possible available at any given time. That would be silly. Instead we remember what we need for day to day use and we sort of put everything else in the back of our minds. However we can always recall things in the future, if for some reason we need it again because the space is always there if we need it. That was my lame attempt at an analogy, but hopefully it made sense.

Cory .... thank you for taking the time to answer and to provide the great information you did. I have, in fact, read that article and I do understand much of what you and it has to say. However, it does not explain why I have to endure programs like 'Stocks,' 'News,' and 'News and Weather' which do actually runas the continually update and sync information. Again, if I have missed a 'setting' that turns these off, I apologize, but that's not really the point as 'I' should have the option to 'opt in' and not be required to 'opt out.' Nonetheless, using your advice, I am willing to try not using the Task Killer and see how well Android does on it's on. And again, thank you for sharing your time and expertise with all of us 'noobs!'

I agree with your statement that we should be able to opt out of the apps we will never use. I no longer have the EVO, but on the Droid X we have a few apps like Blockbuster and Kindle. I personally don't use them and it bugs me that I don't have the option to remove them.

In regards to the stocks widget, If I recall correctly it has it's own settings, with the option to sync only when you ask it to?

The gallery app has not changed a bit. The gallery app demoed in various Froyo videos looks very different.

I can confirm that my Evo does not have the new gallery app with the Froyo update. Still the same gallery app. None of the new pinch and zoom or other "3D" gallery features.

I also have an issue I don't see listed where BeyondPod "shifts". Didn't happen at all under 2.1. If I stop the player and start it again, it starts again, but from a point in the past. (I think it's the last time I stopped.) The current location, though, doesn't change. What happens is that it plays to the end of the track, but the current location thinks there is still time left, so it keeps going and runs out of audio, throwing a "streaming error".

I updated yesterday, don't see much difference BUT, everytime my phone goes on standby it turns off my ringer. When I go to a app and come back to my home screen my widget to toggle ringer on or off is back to off. I have uninstalled my widget reinstalled and even got a different widget all the same. My ringer is constantly OFF. GRRRRR

In order to turn off sync on 'stocks' and 'News' go to Menu->Settings->Accounts and Sync-->and click on each to uncheck the sync. For some reason there's no 'News and Weather' option. But 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

Also, for people with Gmail syncing issues. I noticed that when you click on you Google account in Accounts and Sync there is now a 'sync gmail' option that is unchecked. It wasn't there in 2.1 all it was asked was to sync contacts and the phone would automatically sync Gmail. Click your account and makes sure sync Gmail is checked. This fixed my secondary account problems.

Re: 2.2 Froyo Update - Report & Find Solutions to Issues Here

So, after reading Cory's treatises on the app killers I decided to run a small experiment. With ATK running but set to not kill apps (so that I could open it to see memory usage & which programs and services were running), I began opening as many programs as possible. The memory NEVER went below 100M & sometimes even as the amount of programs open increased there was actually more memory available. Further, it eventually closed some of the apps on its own (and Android itself shutting these programs down apparently "saves their last state" rather than the force close of ATK).

Thank you Cory for your guidance and I suggest all of you read the link above from the android developers site about how it works.

I will admit I am still wondering about battery life and will be seeing how things go over the next few days without autokill, but my suspicion is that the ATK autokilling every 30 minutes might have been just as hard on the battery.

im only experiencing two problems since i did the official update to 2.2 on the Evo...

1) when i rotate my phone to landscape mode, the screen rotates just fine. however, when i rotate back to the normal position, there's about a 4-6 second delay. is that normal since the update? am i the only one experiencing this?

2) my g-mail is fine. however, i have two different email account separate from g-mail. (ex. yahoo or hotmail) the emails that are getting sent to my hotmail are appearing in my yahoo. every time i try to delete those incorrecty received emails, they pop right back up. how do i fix this??

im running everything the stock way. no tasks killers or anything like that. so what's going on with my phone & how do i fix these problems??

Come to think of it doesn't the EVO include HTC's gallery app and not the stock Android app?

That might explain the reason why it looks different.

I am really happy about the dual direction landscape mode, but I too have noticed a significant delay on the return to portrait.

Here is a simple one: How do I get Froyo in the first place for my EVO? I thought that it would have been offered to me over the air from Sprint by now.

The following issues have been reported by less than 2 members. They will be moved to the first post if they are verified by additional members:

...

7. The gallery app has not changed a bit. The gallery app demoed in various Froyo videos looks very different.

...

I'm experiencing this as well, anybody else?

Jeff

Oops, just saw this, I think you're right, Cory...

That might explain the reason why it looks different.

Saving pictures from Handcent issue

First off: No Task Killer installed...

Issue: I use Handcent for my messaging app. Since updating (I was an early updater of the "illegal" update) to 2.2, if I receive a picture text and copy the picture to my SD card it doesn't show up when I try to go into the Gallery to view the picture. If I restart the phone the picture will then appear in the "Download" folder in my Gallery. Also, if I go into the SD Card settings and dismount and then remount the SD card the picture(s) will appear also.

Anyone else with Handcent having this problem?

I also noticed playback of video via the HDMI output results in lag. The picture will lag and stutter.

Hey Cory, remove my error message from the list... After a hard reset with Sprint on the phone, it was working UNTIL I installed my apps.. I traced it to an app called Blackbook by MBLWARE.. So it was user error..

Wrong thread for this bud...but here you go. If you are rooted and have a certain rom flash...it may have this ability to actually update disabled.

Menu>Settings>System Updates>HTC software update>Check

Thanks for the update.

Been having problems with swype beta. Tried the complete unistall, removed installer, turned off and then clean install of swpe beta. It runs through the install correctly but nothing happens when you slide your finger accross the keyboard. One letter at a time works but not really what the program was ment to do.

thank you in advance
