2.3? when and if?

Do we know what 2.3/4 is going to offer? Or are we just greedy for updates? ;)
There are some things that will be useless for the Evo, while others that will beneficial.

Things I remember reading about that can actually be used on the Evo:
  • Native support for multiple cameras.
Developers like Qik, Fring, etc. no longer need to create phone-specific apps for each one that has a front-facing camera, but can use what's available in Gingerbread to have one app that will work with all phones that have FFC.
  • Improved stock keyboard.
I haven't actually tried this, since I'm used to Swype now, but it's supposed to be a lot better than before. The developers community have actually gotten it from ROMs and made it work for Froyo, you can download them from the market and try it out, if you'd like.
  • Improved copy-paste functions.
  • Updated UI.
For instance, apps in the app drawer have a "cascading" effect, for lack of a better term. Do a Google image search for "gingerbread app drawer" and you'll see what I mean.

New feature that will have no effect on the Evo:
  • Near field communication.
  • Support for higher resolutions.
  • Native support for more sensors.

And here are updates that I found through a search:
  • Native support for SIP VoIP.
  • Support for WebM/VP8 video and AAC audio.
  • New audio effects.
  • Enhanced support for native code development.
  • Audio, graphical, and input enhancements for game developers.
  • Concurrent garbage collection for improved performance.
  • Download manager.
  • Improved power management.
  • Switch from YAFFS to ext4 filesystem.

How did you come into contact with this rep? I'm now getting conflicting reports from my sources at HTC and Sprint.

@splmonster, Any updates from your sources at HTC/Sprint on the Gingerbread update?

The way I am seeing it is this: The new 2.3.3 version of Gingerbread is what was going to be called 2.4. Rather than jump to 2.4, they just went with 2.3.3. Here's why:

Android 2.2 - API Level 8
Android 2.3 - API Level 9
Android 2.3.3 - API Level 10
Android 3.0 - API Level 11
(Reference: Android SDK | Android Developers)

It wouldn't make sense to add in Android 2.4 after Android 3.0. I'm betting 2.3.3 is the final version of Gingerbread that was going to be called 2.4.

Now that the EVO 3D has been announced, when/if can we expect Gingerbread for the original EVO?

If you don't mind giving up Sense, just root and go with Cyanogen Mod 7. I've been running Gingerbread for a month or so. The latest nightly releases are ready for prime time in my opinion. I haven't been having any issues. Rooting really isn't as scary as it sounds. It was quick and easy, and fun, especially if you are one of those people who love to play with electronic toys. Pretty much like getting a new phone.

So they are holding out just to milk more money out of the public. Seems kinda pointless considering the general public doesn't know what gingerbread is let alone their phone even has an operating system.

I guess it comes down contractual obligations and marketing studies. You want a successful launch of your product without hiccups. That means a controlled environment. Lets face it, they don't consider existing EVO owners as part of their controlled environment. I mean, honestly, do you? LOL

In no way does it seem pointless. This is the business and the way it works. How else would these companies turn a profit? They have to do stuff like this, and I understand not upgrading a device that is older and not the big kid on the block anymore.

Conflicts come from getting too much information from too many sources. Whichever update is coming... It will be here very very soon!!

summer is when we will get GB with new Sense

HTC EVO 4G to get Android 2.3 and new HTC Sense, but only after new flagship Gingerbread phone is released?

You know, most people outside these forums actually do hold their phone for the duration of a contract (unless they lose the phone and dont have ins, etc).

So honestly, holding back 2.3 on Evo classic makes no sense. That would be basically saying the Evo 3D is only a marginal upgrade anyway and they need more bullets points on why X consumer needs to upgrade. And also the argument can be made that the true gadgets freaks that would dump their current working phone and pay retail for the next are the types to have been using 2.3 via root+flash.

The EVO 3d is touted to be released this summer/june and features Android's 2.3.

Now if there isn't an official OTA by then, the awesome Dev's will definitly be porting it to our OG EVO's.

Just because the Evo 3D is coming out doesn't mean Sprint will stop selling the Evo. Last weekend, Sprint was still selling the Hero. It's a year and a half old.

Also, the Evo is either the second most popular or most Android phone in the U.S. So what ever Sprint decides will affect a lot of users, and they don't want to upset them. But as of now, we haven't had any OFFICIAL word of HTC or Sprint. Just speculation. Also, don't believe customer service reps. Two years ago, one told me the Iphone was coming to Sprint...

And even if it doesn't come out or quick enough, there sure will be a port of the Evo 3D Rom probably with everything working.

That issue was only in 2.3 I believe. It was a Nexus S bug.

The SMS bug wasn't just a 2.3 bug. Used to happen all the time on the stock Evo rom. It was fixed in 2.2.2 (i think) and 2.3.3. I haven't noticed it on CM7 anymore which is 2.3.3. So hopefully this will encourage HTC to update.

I posted a link earlier in this thread. HTC did say it would be out after release of the Evo 3D. So that's pretty official...
Weird never saw one Evo with 2.1 or 2.2 have the SMS bug. Every article I ever read is that it was a 2.3 bug on the Nexus S only, cause at that time it was the only device with Gingerbread. You may wanna check with Jerry or Phil of AC. Pretty positive that bug was GB only, because the fix that was pushed was a 2.3.2 GB update.

Android 2.3.2 Update Pushing to Nexus S Phone, Fixes SMS Bug

Newbie here, can someone translate this to English please?

You know...you big wigs tie me into a 2 year contract then leave my device in the dust? Thats one of the reasons i left HP/Palm. Get it together!

4 maintenance releases and one OS update in the last nine months. Yeah, Sprint and HTC have left your device in the dust. Yeah, right.

Well, oddly enough they ARE in the business of SELLING phones. They don't make any money by constantly pushing out updates to old devices.

English Translation : There wasn't any known SMS bug in either 2.1 or 2.2 versions of updates.( In his recognition)

Gingerbread update won't be available for the OG EVO phones, until the EVO 3D is released in summer of 2011(June)
