2016 VW Golf Android Auto won't work with LG G4

Just got a text from the service centre and they've told me the software is all up to date so there's nothing they can do. Any suggestions what to do next? Could it be grounds for a replacement (if that would make any difference)?

Unless the update is on its way, but hasn't arrived yet for your model of VW MIB unit, I think it is grounds for replacement for the LG G4. I can try to connect one of my parents' G4s to see if the update sorted this out for that too.

It has sorted it for my Samsung S7 Edge and Nexus 6P, although in the case of the Samsung, every time I connect it, I have to wait for a permissions dialog, and immediately when it shows up, select "Allow". If I wait for more than a second, the dialog disappears, and the MIB tries to connect using MirrorLink. I thej have to disconnect and reconnect, but get that dialog approved in time. I don't even know the text in the dialog because it flashes past so quickly.

Still, before the software update, I was having major issues with both phones.

Hey guys! I received an email from Android Auto support team, after the feedback I sent a few months ago.

Hi there,
You're receiving this email, because you let us know that you've been experiencing issues plugging in and connecting to Android Auto in your vehicle.

We've released a new version of Android Auto today - version 1.6 - that should fix connectivity issues. Please be sure to update to the new version, and let us know if you see an improvement.

If you're still experiencing issues, please respond with the following information, so we can help:
-Your country
-Your phone type (make and model)
-Your Android version (Settings --> About phone --> Android version)
-Your vehicle or aftermarket receiver type (year, make, model)

To see a list of compatible vehicles, please visit Android Auto.

Thanks!
The Android Auto team

If you don't want to wait the rollout in the Play Store, I found it available on apkmirror @ Android Auto 1.6.209040 (2691474-release) APK Download by Google Inc. - APKMirror and so far.. it works on the first try! I tried it at least 8 times tonight going to various places using Google Maps. Looks like it fixed the loop, but I still have an issue with the phone Bluetooth re-pairing after an AA connection. No big deal though for me anymore since it works right away now.

It actually tells me reading USB.. then nothing for about a second and tells me error.. then it says connecting to Android Auto, and it works right away now. No fiddling with killing the black AA from the recents or turning off Bluetooth. I am now satisfied. Try it out!

Unfortunately, couldn't install the AA 1.6 update. Verizon HTC One M8 with Android 6 (marshmallow). Still can't connect to AA via my MIB II VW GTI S
HW 620
SW 597

4 months w the car, several cables. Can ONLY connect on a fresh install of AA after employing many of the fixes on this thread.

Advice?

Hey guys,
Sorry to hear some are still having problems. The 6.0 update fixed so.e things and created some other new problems namely the phone wanting to go into charge mode by default. Unfortunately there is no way to tell it to use MTP mode by default, It's always something I guess. After many dealership visits and phone calls to VWOA I finaly came to the realization after catching VWOA lying to me that the dealer was actually more in my corner than VW. In the end VW gave me 1 payment back and my dealer matched them 1 payment giving me 2 payments. I told VW USA they have no business charging me for a feature that they can't deliver on. After acting like they cared and giving me a payment as a token of faith for the inconvenience they said they are working on the problem and will keep me in the loop. After all was said and done they backtracked and said in so many words there is no problem with the unit ( oh yeah VWOA and the dealer replaced my unit with no improvement...surprise). The dealer said that VWOA had told them something different than they told me and that they know that there is a problem. The service manager informed me he can offer up to 2 months of car payments without any approval and later offered me 1 payment. I wasn't really looking for financial compensation as much as a working unit but hey now I am invested, i have lost faith in VWOA and am frankly a little frustrated. So now I deal with the inconvenience and just go on about my business. I haven't really followed this thread for awhile but wanted to hear about the findings in the latest update and thought I would share.
Good Luck

For me, Android Auto v 1.6 fixed my issues. It connects on first try now, no fiddling with turning on/off Bluetooth or killing the ghost AA in the recents. I am assuming by now the newer AA version is available on Google Play, otherwise it's available on apkmirror.com. Ryan, why couldn't you install the version 1.6? Did it give you an error?

I still have to re-pair my phone via Bluetooth once in a while when I just use Bluetooth when I keep my phone in my pocket, but for me, the problem is pretty much fixed. I hope 1.6 helps you guys out. Worst case, maybe you can send an email to android-auto-feedback@google.com and supply the information they asked me to give if I was still having issues:

Same here dgiaffe. Thanks for the link to 1.6. It sorted things out. One other point I'll make. I do have Developer Options enabled on my phone, and I have set USB configuration in Developer options default to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), which has stopped it asking how I want to use the device each time I connect. I still do get prompted when I connect to "Allow" the connection, and I have to select Allow. After that, no problems. Worst case, if I accidentally don't press Allow, it will start trying to connect via Mirrorlink, but I have disabled the CarPlay Stub through Package Disabler Pro for Samsung, so that never takes long to fail, and all I have to do is unplug, replug, and this time select "Allow".

Yea I get that Allow message pretty much every time I connect too. I just looked and something is not enabled in my settings. On my G4: Settings -> Security -> Notification Access --> Android Auto is off. I'll try to turn it on and see if I still get the "Allow" message. I'll report back!

Great idea. I just found it on my S7 Edge too after reading this. So for those with a Samsung S7 or likely S6, Lock screen and security/other security settings/Notification access/

I'm heading out right now to the hardware store, so should be able to let you know if it worked. If this removes that last bit, this will work perfectly - the way I would expect it to. :-).

fwiw -
the update has been a huge step forward. I closed all apps, cleared AA cache and connected before turning on the car. This has been my normal operating procedure before hooking up. Linked up immediately and worked on my commute until the lock screen kicked in.

Can anyone point me to steps to allow AA keep the device from Locking?

Samsung Note 4
Android 5.1.1
Verizon
USB debugging off
AA 1.6
2016 Volkswagen Passat

I'll report back with success rate on additional uses - when following my SOP, just plugging in, etc.

So unfortunately that didn't stop the Allow step, but it's close enough for now.

I've got my lock screen settings to take longer than the default 5 seconds to lock, and turned off lock screen with power button and that resolved it.

Ok, actually, it didn't stop the prompt, but if I ignore the prompt, it still connects me to Android Auto, so +dgiaffe, your idea sorted it out for me. Thanks!

Hi Guys,

I've created an account just for this topic. This topic has been very helpfull and I'd like to share some things with you all.

I'm from The Netherlands and I drive a 2016 Golf GTE. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
We officially don't have Android Auto here yet, but thanks to this topic I was able to find a download.

I too had a lot of problems connecting my phone to AA. It kept connecting via Mirrorlink and refused to open AA.
Man, I was even a little bummed out about purchasing my S7 Edge. My iPhone worked flawless on the Golf GTE with Carplay.
However, scrolling trough this topic gave some good tips and luckely I managed to get it to work in just a few minutes after spending yesterday evening in my car getting more and more frustrated.

What I've done to get this working was the following:

Set Android Auto to prefered selection.
Car off
Connect USB cable to car
Connect USB cable to phone (and wait a few seconds)
Open Android Auto app on phone
Car on, radio on

BOOM! There you have it.

After that I was able to leave the car on radio, connect while radio is on. Even without opening the Android Auto app manually.
It seems to do a very good job!

Thank you all for the information in this topic.

Side question for people that are using AA with their VW, has anyone figured out how to increase the volume (voice)? The main volume only works for media but not maps or Google now voice response.

The only way I've figured out of doing this is waiting for the voice to come on, and increasing the volume during that period (you have to be quick). You'll notice that the volume line in the center of your dash is green with a different icon instead of red. Once you set it, the system remembers the volume. So its a patience game.

This worked, thank you very much

Thanks for the suggestion on changing the locking function. The issue I'm having is that the phone is set to lock at 30 minutes (longest I can set it, I've got MS Exchange on the system) and that is when the locking causes the disconnection.

My Update -
I'm still have issues with being able to connect without clearing the cache. TonyS7Edge, I'll hopefully be able replicate your BOOM and get things going in a more repeatable fashion :)

Dylan, have you added your car's Bluetooth to Smart Lock? This is a bit tricky because when you connect to Android Auto, it disconnects and then reconnects the bluetooth before your screen goes dark.

So get into the can and don't connect it to Android Auto. Wait for the BT connection to work, and then it should prompt you to add the cars Bluetooth as a Smart Lock device. This will ensure that your phone doesn't lock as long as you're in the car.
