At work , tried it a couple times didn't work, on 1 bar using 3G , barely service BC in a basement ...decided to shutdown the phone after force stopping the app worked first try. Now I'm getting 2 bars of 4G still gotta mess around more thanks guys so far good

Just clear data then force close and manually reboot. It worked for me and I imagine it's easier than pressing check for updates a zillion times!

Tried it and worked after one try. Signal seems stronger, and I will pay attention to battery life.

I tried this last night in Missouri and Oklahoma, probably fifty times,(I'm OCD and had nothing better to do, lost count), no dice...tried it twice this afternoon while driving thru Austin Texas, whammo! Seems to be a solid signal, and no data dropping (blue bars) like before. I get around, so I'll be giving it the official road test the next few days, and I'll be home in northern Indiana on Wed, where we've always had problems at our home, but okay signals out in public...

Had been repeatedly trying the usual "check for updates" and no joy.
Since the 3-click worked immediately after several unsuccessful tries of the "check for update", it doesn't seem to be a coincidence.

Gah I finally got it to work!! If anyone is having the same problem I did (unable to clear cache because it was stuck in 'Computing' mode), what worked for me was placing a 'Settings--Apps' widget on my home screen. When I opened Google Services from the widget, I was able to use the Clear Cache button. Not sure WHY, but what the hell. Getting sweet 4.0.4 love on my phone right now...
