3G Now, Will Get you Unlimited 4G after 7/7

I hope this is true for Blackberries as I was going to go to Verizon later on today to get a Droid Charge and ditch the BB Storm 1 9530 due to all the unlimited rumors. Now I don't have to. Thanks...
Just to further clarify. I know no one rwally has a definitive answer but in essense i could use a friends Blackberry, sign up for a monthly data plan, and when the Bionic releases, i can get that and Grandfather into a 2year unlimited?

Don't you already have a new Charge to begin with?

Hi guys,

Potentially a newbie question, but I don't think I saw it answer anywhere yet. I have been on the verizon's family plan for the past 5-6 years and have been due for an upgrade for about a year, still got a NE2 discount. My current personal phone is a LG dare, so it doesn't need the 3g data plan (my work phone is a blackberry that my company is paying so never had the need..). I was wondering if I just add in the unlimited 3g data feature to my personal LG Dare phone before 7/7, will I still be able to get grandfathered into the unlimited 4g plan once I upgrade to the droid bionic or would I have to actually get a personal phone now (another blackberry/droid) that needs the data plan before they would grandfather me in?

returned it.

Good phone, but im not so sure im as into the whole smartphone scene as i thought i would be.

Browsing the web is a chore. I thought 4.3inch screens would be too big, but i want bigger. Using on screen keyboard is a chore. I cant adjust. And the fact that im not using it as much as i thought i would be.

However Im still around just incase i do change my mind.

Turning the screen into landscape makes it much easier to type. Many new smartphone users never do this for some reason. Surfing the web on a smartphone is easy as hell. Probably just not used to it. Keep trying.

No because the LG Dare is a "feature phone" not a "Smartphone". The Dare's Data plan is different than the 3G/4GLTE data plans, and I would find it very difficult for them to let you keep unlimited if the plans are different.

I have a Droid Charge and I know 4G LTE is being tested in my market (showed up last week on my phone) but since I am 3G for now, I have used 2.7GB this month. I don't tether, don't watch movies, I surf, install apps on my Android, especially if I just did a complete wipe and installed a new ROM. I like to install the apps again.

So why exactly should I be forced to use WiFi (I can at work) but elsewhere you need to hunt down a free hot spot and that is not ideal to me. I pay for the data and rarely if ever exceed 5GB. For the new tiered plans the $29.99 should be at least 3GB and/or include FREE tethering for those who are on a tiered plan. I should not have to pay $50 for 5GB with 2GB of that for tethering use.

As long as you have unlimited data on your current phone# and have a smartphone you will keep your unlimited data. The only way you have to go to a tiered plan is activating a NEW line of servive, disconnecting the line and trying to re-activate it, or transferring your current plan to another individual. So you can upgrade to a new phone signing a new 2-yr contract, switch from family to individual or individual to family plans, change minutes, txt msg, or calling features as long as the phone# and smartphone you are using has unlimited data already.

Cool, i just got a Blackberry Bold from a friend to lock in.

Supposedly blackberry's may be different atleast thats what some people were saying since technically blackberry is different data so i would go talk to verizon and check.

well that's what i confirmed with a CSR Monday that if i went back to my storm 2 i would be grandfathered no questions. Smart phone is a smart phone, doesn't matter if android or blackberry. Like i said from Mondays talk is i was given the wrong info from that CSR last week about bb and android data plans

Exactly. Just because we are making the switch to Android from a BB doesn't mean that everyone else is. If someone currently has a BB with unlimited data and is planning on upgrading to another BB, they'd still be grandfathered in too. And if they tried adding a line to get a BB they'd have to switch to tiered all the same...

After reading the thing about getting out of your contract with Verizon because of the change in regulatory fee, could we use that to our advantage.

Could I do this:

1. Buy a subsidized 4G phone before July 1st so that my contract has the old regulatory fee.
2. I have 60 days from July 1st to cancel my contract without an ETF.
3. I end my two year contract but keep my service with Verizon.
4. Then I can by a Droid Bionic with subsidized pricing whenever it comes out and renew my 2 year contract.

I see one problem with this, will i be allowed to keep the original phone or how would that work?

Loosing your grandfathered "unlimited"

Alright, first things first! I'm new to these forums but so far it seems like there is quite a wealth of information here so I figured it would be a good place to bring my questions.

I recently went to a Verizon store near my house and spoke with one of the reps about the upcoming tiered options. I have held off for a long time on making the switch to a smartphone because I didn't REALLY need it, and while I was in college it definitely would have been a distraction during class. Now I've graduated and have been working for the past 15 months and definitely want one more than ever. The Bionic has looked really appeal to me so far, and my original plan was this...

Upgrading my contract to unlimited before 7/7, and use my best friends original Droid until the Bionic comes out, and then buy the Bionic and just activate my plan for the Bionic.

However... the guy at Verizon told me that I would loose my unlimited access if I were to switch phones after 7/7. Anyone know if that's correct? Truthfully the guy was pretty arrogant and a real dickhead and I'm not sure how much I should trust his word...

Also, I've heard people saying that they wanted to be grandfathered in to 4G? Does that imply you have to have a different plan to access 4G? While I'm certainly not e-tarded, I am still pretty new to this scene and just want to make sure I have my facts straight.

Thanks in advance for the help guys, and I tried searching the forums for some information about this stuff but didn't find much pertaining my my questions, so if I missed something I apologize!

There's a wealth of information in almost all of the latest threads in the Bionic forums, but in a nutshell:

We don't know yet if you have to have been contracted with Verizon prior to 7/7 to be able to keep your unlimited data. So far, we know that "Current customers will be able to keep their unlimited data when upgrading or renewing", but if you're planning to go month-to-month on a Smartphone you didn't purchase through them, then the verdict is still up in the air as to whether you can be grandfathered in.

The logic is that VZW can consider "Smartphone users" those who at some point signed a contract for subsidized price on the phone, and be a ****** when it comes to people who got their devices somewhere else. In these unusual cases, we'll only really know once the plans actually start rolling by and people post their stories.

It's worth giving a shot, though. You won't be the only one trying to use the same method.

Re: Loosing your grandfathered "unlimited"

All the information that we have to date points to you being able to retain unlimited data as long as you have a Smartphone unlimited plan in place before 7/7. The general consensus is that there will be no difference going from 3G to 4G and you will be fine. Of course, VZW could change these rules at any time.

All i want to know is, how does someone grandfather into something they never signed a contract for?

This is for those people that got a Smartphone and went on a monthly basis.

Re: Loosing your grandfathered "unlimited"

Alright great, thanks guys. The other thing that really threw me through a loop was that he also said that RENEWING your contract would cause me to loose my grandfathered unlimited also which seems like serious BS...

I think I'm just going to go for it.. get my buddies phone, upgrade to unlimited, and get the Bionic when the time comes and just see what happens. Verizon and their douchebaggery... seriously. Such crap.

He's full of it. Don't expect VZW to let this go on forever, it will stop at some point for sure, but right now, you can keep unlimited when renewing or upgrading.
