4.2.2 OTA Tomorrow

True, but you do wait 12 months for the next version of OS...so yeah timely updates are nice but the major ones still only come each fall normally, and certain things work for only certain models. So from that respect there are still frustrating issues, even in the iOS world. And there must be additional frustrations otherwise we all wouldn't be here. :)

Ehhh, that's true to a point. There's usually one or two large updates a year, but there are usually 2-4 smaller ones in between. Again running Android malware and security holes are a concern, I want those patched ASAP. I read recently nearly 100% of new malware is for the Android OS. http://mashable.com/2013/05/22/new-mobile-malware-targets-android-phones/

And if you use common sense, you won't get that malware.

My only frustration with iOS is the screen size and default apps. I'm looking at the Nexus 4 while at the mall tomorrow and decide, if I make a switch to that one. I do miss timely updates and patches. Being at the mercy of AT&T for calls and connection is enough. I don't necessarily need to be at their mercy for my device's operating system as well. But there is always talk of the HTC One Google Edition.

Maybe it's just because I have had a Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 for a couple months and I don't find 4.2.2 all thy special...but I'm perfectly happy on 4.1.2 with my One.

I remember flashing a leaked Froyo update early on my OG Evo I was so update obsessed...but honestly nowadays it's just not as important. It'll come when it comes, but until then, we're still rockin the best Android phone in existence ;)

I spoke to someone at HTC today and she told me that they have no software updates of any kind planned any time in the near future.

I knew I shouldn't have gotten a phone with older software. I had hoped that with the phone being brand new and a premium device that software updates would be timely. My mistake.

I think they have a policy about not commenting on future events. The updates have been leaking already, which usually happens close to release timing.

Never buy a device expecting future features. If you're not satisfied with it out of the box just don't purchase it. The anxiety will bother you to the point that you will perceive that you got a POS.

4.2.2 won't make it leaps and bounds better than it is. I truly got this phone based on all the reviews I read, mainly here on AC. Everyone said that the S4 is packed to the teeth with features, but if they had to put their hard earned cash on a new phone it would be for the One. That is what convinced me, that it works very well on 4.1.2.

Its not really 4.2.2 I want, its to get rid of the f'ing menu bar!

So here's my question about this. If 4.2.2 does away with the menu bar how is the end user supposed to know there is a menu? If developers would update their apps and build in a menu button then it would be obvious, but without a visual indication that a menu exists how does the end user know? Do we just guess?

Maybe there would be an introduction/tutorial immediately after updating. Idk, how did it work with the other HTC phones that did have a menu workaround?

Long pressing (or double tap...not sure which) the home button will bring up the menu....kinda like on the S4 but not really. :)

I'm sure once 4.2.2 gets installed, there's a little tutorial telling you about the changes and you have to tap OK or slide to end making sure you have to read it. OR, they could just say screw it and not say a word making users go insane.

All the articles I read say long press in an app for menu to come up. Who cares its a lot better then having the black bar at the bottom of the screen

Yeah I understand how to activate it, but since not all apps have a menu how will we know one exists? Do we just guess and try to activate it and if there is one it shows up and if not nothing happens? That's a terrible user experience. I'd much rather have the tiny black bar that is a visual indication that there's a menu rather than an inconsistent user experience.

This is exactly how I feel! Leave the black bar and let me complain to the app developer. Or not use the app if it bothers me that much...

Exactly, don't buy devices thinking that you are going to get the updates early. They will come, but how often is still to be seen.

The HTC One works very well with 4.1.2. I want the few new features but I can wait a little.

I'm glad to see so many willing victims err...participants when the update comes out. Verizon's last update on the S3 is what prompted me to move back to Sprint again, and the One. It flat ruined my phone, and having had it happen before it's like owning the same vehicle after a wreck...It's never the same after getting "fixed". If nobody has any problems, I'll update a month or so later.

Couldnt agree more. My evo lte is still on ICS (awesome phone recently retired) because the Jellybean update had many people in fits of rage lol. I wont update to 4.2 for a week or two after the update's out. Better safe in my opinion

I would love to have the toggles at the top and the menu bar gone. Looks like the S3 may get updated before the One. Awesome. The one is still an awesome phone. Although I just had to wipe mine because of a mysterious error message that started showing up.

Every update I have gone through in every OS tells you want is being updated, so I don't know why it's being questioned.
