4.3 Update for Sprint Galaxy S3 has Arrived

I didn't, in fact, my phone runs so well that I rooted it to do a "no nag screen mod" so I wouldn't have to update. In "my case", I asked myself, why mess with something that works so well and is not broken and does everything I want.

I say the above because from what I have read, 4.3 isn't that huge of an upgrade for me in the things that I was looking for. So I am happy where I am at. I am glad I am rooted though, so many cool apps you can have and some of the ones I use right now gain even more flexibility. For me rooted and stock is best for me with a few tweaks here and there. Maybe if 4.4 ever comes to my device, or maybe a new phone?

Just my .02 as you asked.

You're on 4.1.2??

Are you rooted with CWM or TWRP recovery?

meyerweb,

I'm bone stock on the Sprint SIII, and I got the install nag overnight. You mentioned on the Knox thread that if it were you with a totally stock phone, you would minimally root and install a custom recovery. I like this idea, mainly just to get rid of the nag for now. I see that you have mentioned a couple of custom recoveries here so I would like your suggestion for which of these two CWM or TWRP that you recommend since it has been a long time since I last rooted a phone (Hero). If you've already covered this somewhere, I didn't see it, please just point me to your existing opinion. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I am on 4.1.2

And using Touch Wiz! :)

Sweet, thats what I'm on and staying on as well! :D

I also haven't received the OTA nag.......yet!! lol! But if it ever does come, I'll eventually have to root this damn thing I suppose. I'm just scared I might get the full blown rooting itch ya know. Its like going to a candy store and coming out with 1 piece of candy! You really wanted more, lol!!

It looks like I'm on the same path that you took. Do you mind if I ask how you did the "no nag screen mod" and which custom recovery you used?

I can't quite remember, but if you are proactive and root first and do a proactive screen nag mod, it's like three steps less to do it now rather than later - uh, call me lazy! :D

Just updated. No issues here so far, even the reported ones. Also, no bloatware.

But I can't find how to do lock screen widgets. What am I missing?

There are two Surefire ways, one is to use "FOTAkill.apk" which I haves used in the past and used again this time around, and the other is to modify the build.pro and fake it out by replace MD4 with MK3 in like 4 or 5 lines of code to take care of the "nag screen" and two alternatives that are not Surefire ways which may or may not work.

I think meyerweb posted a link for it on that points to and XDA site. - it is somewhere in this thread I think. I can try and find it, but have to run and pickup some parts. I will try and find it later tonight if I can.

But I think which works real well for me is go to Google and put in without quotes "XDA FOTA.apk" - I think it was by cnexus?

Edited: long time CWM user in the past, so this time I thought I would try TWRP version 2.6.3.1 haven't tried a restore with it yet, so I don't know if it works, so crossing my fingers on that - but I have made a few nandroids just in case, and that seemed to go smooth.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll end up probably doing just that since I'm just as lazy as you, lol!! :D

I've been using TWRP because, when I rooted my S3, it offered a number of features that CWM didn't. But in all honesty I don't think there's a lot to choose from between CWM touch and TWRP for typical needs.

I recommend this root procedure: [Tutorial] Rooting the Sprint GalaxyS3 the Easy Way - xda-developers

Just don't try to restore a CWM backup with TWRP.

Meyerweb, if I wanted to root my S3 but keep it stock, is there anything that I will lose or break or become broken because of root?? Does battery life/management take a slight hit when rooted?! Currently, for my use, my S3 has been working beautifully! I just want to know what to expect in case (most likely) I do decide to root my device.

Just to jump in, I rooted 4 of my phones over the past years - and battery life has never taken a hit on any of the 4 phones.

With that being said; 2 were stock rom and stock kernel - the other 2 were stock rom and stock/custom kernel so that I could overclock and undervolt - all were fine.

IMHO - being rooted basically means giving yourself admin rights in MS Window terminology - so it should do nothing on battery life.

Yup, understand

Well, the only phone I ever rooted was my Epic 4G and when I rooted it with CM9, it worked great but the battery life diminished much more rapidly than on stock. I thought there might be somewhat of an issue here as well but its good to know that there wont be an issues. Thanks for your help glider!

All rooting does is give you, and certain apps, access to system level files and functions that you normally don't have access to. It doesn't change anything about how the device or its applications work, battery life, or anything else. There are certain apps that require root to run, and it's possible some of those apps might have an impact on battery life. On the flip side, once you're rooted you can use apps like Titanium Backup to Freeze apps that might run even though you don't use them. That can improve battery life. Don't go freezing apps randomly, though. Some may actually be necessary even if you don't recognize them.

If you start flashing custom ROMs or Kernels, then all kinds of things can change. Many actually improve battery life. But many can be kind of experimental, and cause problems. Most importantly, if you're going to start flashing custom ROMs, be 100% positive it's for your exact version of the S3 (e.g., Sprint).

That was most likely due to CM9, not te rooting itself.

Thanks again to mouseglider and meyerweb. I'm good to go on a nag free 4.1.2. Will consider the un-Knox'ed 4.3 at a later time.

Thanks for the info Meyerweb!

My wife's S3 was updated 2 weeks ago. My S3 still has no update, and I check almost daily. Has anyone received an update lately?

TIA,
Brad
