So I have never done side loading before and I am still on 4.4
If anyone can explain or post a link to where they show a step by step process guiding me how to do it without messing up a week old Nexus 5, it would be appreciated :)

If you are still on 4.4 I think you need to side load the 4.4.1 update then again side load the 4.4.2 update - I don't see links to download an update from 4.4 to 4.4.2. See this post for the 4.4.1 update: Android 4.4.1 update for Nexus 5 now live | Android Central

Then see this post for the 4.4.2 update download: Nexus OTA updates to Android 4.4.2 are pushing out now | Android Central

Follow this guide written for the Nexus 7 and substitute the update files for the ones you download for the Nexus 5 (4.4.1, 4.4.2): How to manually update your Nexus tablet to KitKat [updated] | Android Central

Let us know if you have any questions and we'll do our best to help.

I have the first version of the Nexus 7 from the Play Store and the updates are timely. Already got the OTA 4.4.2 update. Glad to see support for the older products not just the new ones.

Still on 4.4, N5. Akron, Ohio. ><

I'm one of the fools that checks "update" every couple hours for the past 2 weeks.

I am new to sdk, adb, sideload, etc. I tried twice to update from 4.4 to 4.4.2 with no joy. I am on a MacBook Pro, so ran into a few issues before finally succeeding (!) on my third try.

1. On a Mac, commands are given in Terminal. Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
2. In Terminal "cd" is the prefix command to select location.
3. In Terminal "./" must immediately precede "adb" .
4. Safari automatically unzips "safe" files. I was trying to use an unzipped folder. Disable auto-unzipping in Safari thus: Safari > Preferences > General > Open "safe" files after downloading: uncheck.

I know all this information is out there, and there is probably a great tutorial that I missed. I think all my trial and error was a good thing. I got to feel my way through some of the processes and not just follow a set of instructions. Thanks to the Android community for the encouragement. I'm glad I kept at it, it feels great to have the update through my own efforts, rather than waiting and checking my phone for the updates to be pushed to me.

Still on 4.4. TMO in San Diego, N5 purchased from Google store.

Good information, Twyf! I've been thinking about putting together a sideload/manually update guide geared towards Mac users. I will keep this information handy if I decide to do it and will include it as helpful tips. Thanks again!

You can also right click on the file link, select 'download linked file as' and provide a destination folder and change the file name if desired. This way you don't have to change any Safari settings, and it won't unzip the file.

Yup, thank you :)

all right!! Finally! I "have" the update, well it is waiting to download on wifi..... which i am currently on. Google needs to come up with a way where you can download updates over the network. Wasn't there a way to do this in older versions of Android?

I received the notification ota and clicked on download. It said it was restarting and got an error message with a droid on it. When I started the phone I had no notification and I'm still on kikat 4.4. I have a nexus 5. Is this normal?

Btw, do I need to have my bootloader unlocked for sideloading?
Or is that only required for flashing custom ROM and things of that sort?
No, bootloader does not have to be locked. Only the Android sdk installed and enable debugging on the device to make the magic happen.

I just got the update alert! You were right! :)
Told you :) Oh, and tonight's powerball numbers are 15, 26, 5, 40, 12 and power ball number is 8. You're welcome :)

Disclaimer: Those are not the actual winning numbers, just made up by me :).
