6P Review and Annoyance

That's fine if you're set on what phone you're going to get. But if you're on the fence like I am, then finding out more information before you buy, especially if you have no way to check them out in person before hand, then it is very important for some of us. Right now I'm deciding between the N6p and the Moto XPE, and since neither phone is available before you buy, every bit of information helps.

I've still had no luck finding out if any of the tech sites have Nexus models in hand and are working on reviews. I'm hoping the majority will have reviews out before the 25th when the $50 Playstore credit expires. Worst case I can return both (14 days for the Moto and 15 for the N6p), bit I'd rather not mess around with that if I don't have to.

So has anyone heard any of the people at the tech sites saying if they currently have a review unit in their hands or not, because they usually take anywhere from a week to two weeks before they put out a review.

I am debating on the two as well. The issue I have with the Nexus 6P is the AMOLED screen (I have had AMOLED before and it had burn in issues).

You can go to bestbuy and try out the Moto X that is what I did. I liked how it felt and the screen looked wonderful.

Unfortunately, where I live, the nearest Best Buy (and official Verizon corporate store) are 200 miles away. And my nearest authorized Verizon third party retailer is around 90 miles away. So a chance to see it before I buy isn't in the cards for me, which is why I need as much info going in as possible. When I was in the town with a third party retailer, I tried out both the Note5 and the iPhone 6s Plus, since they are the closest in hand feel to the XPE and 6p, size wise anyway. That's the best I can accomplish where I am. But thanks for the heads up anyway.

If you look up the 6p on YouTube and set the upload time to 24hrs, there are several videos uploaded today from India!

Did the same last week when google released the phone in Japan.

This time there are camera and benchmark test.

wonder why none did those test when it was released in US

Burn in is pretty much my only concern with AMOLED now that they can pretty much show white. Hopefully for most of us that will move on to a new phone in a year or so it won't be an issue.

Does anyone else think that it's weird that none of the "hands on" videos even mention the quality of the front facing speakers? I mean they might really suck. Nobody is talking about them.

nah I don't mind the wait ... a month isn't that long and I'm just happy ordering on the play store went smooth this year ... im so impressed w this phone that it's tough to be upset.

I would like to see some reviews though, and I feel for people on the fence that prefer to see some and want to get in on the play store deal. could always order it then return if you don't like it.

really looking forward to seeing how the battery holds up. the combination of that large battery, note 5 display (or similar), stock and doze should make this the most efficient phone ever. also anxious to see how the 810 holds up to some heavy use ... my guess it'll be a nonissue

I was under the assumption that PA took that into account when they came up with that. From their Note5 review...

"For starters, the Note5’s Super AMOLED display produces just a smidgen better 470 nit luminance, thanks in part to its high-contrast mode kicking in when it’s in direct sunlight."

Is that not the same mode Display Mate is talking about when it's in automatic brightness? If it is, then they are getting two different measurements. If it isn't, it still doesn't matter because if non Galaxy devices can't make use of it anyway, then the 470 nits it gets in manual mode is the max it will achieve in the Nexus 6p, which puts the 714 nit measurement from the Moto XPE's LCD ahead of it in terms of max brightness.

Am I not reading that correctly or what?

I love reading all the reviews, especially anandtech, but at the end of the day I can care less about specs/benchmarks ... I judge a display from what u see, not nits or anything else. Samsung displays are sick, and I expect the 6p to be similar. not all that impressed with the MXP display, actually kinda let down by the phone in general (can't really put my finger on why, just the way I feel)

This is my exact concern with the phone too. Burn in. It irritates me to such an extent that a screen that is 100 percent guaranteed to have some sort of burn in after a year or two usage can be put on such expensive hardware. Yeah it looks fantastic when its new. But I would so much rather an IPS screen. Oh well. I guess that's what nexus protect is for!

Probably because all of the 3 minute hands on videos we've seen to this point are all in noisy rooms with dozens of nexus devices all getting the same quick looks by people.

No one has done a full "hands on" with the device yet, aside from these quick looks.

I have a two and half year old Galaxy S4 with no burn in at all. I keep my brightness on auto, so I would guess that helps as well. I think a number of people that had issues with burn in kept their brightness at 100% and the display turned off after 10 minutes. :) I would also assume the newer AMOLED panels are less susceptible to burn in?

Likely less susceptible sure. The Organic component to amOled screens make eventual burn in pretty much guaranteed though, with symptoms showing sooner or later depending on how much you use your phone. And burn in can be as slight as a slightly brighter bar at the top or bottom of the screen from where the soft buttons and notification bars are consistently black on the screen, with more extensive burn in being the silhouette of app icons.

On my old galaxy nexus, it was a brighter bar at the top and bottom of the screen from the soft keys and notification bar.

Did you try changing the display setting to vibrant on the phone from standard?

A new feature on the Moto X Pure is the ability to change the displays “Color mode.” Motorola decided to go with LCD instead of AMOLED on this year’s Moto X, but you can still get those vibrant AMOLED colors with this feature.

Go into Settings > Display and find “Color Mode.” There will be two options to choose from: normal and vibrant. The normal setting will give you more true-to-life colors, while the vibrant setting will be more saturated. Choose whatever floats your boat.

Are you sure you don't have any burn in. I have met people that don't think they do and then I show it to them. I seem to notice burn in easily on a screen.
