99.9% sure leak

The problem is it will not be a hit with enough consumers....same as the M8.

While that sucks for HTC, it isn't really a matter of the phone's design or even any aspect of the phone's actual merit. It's entirely advertisement and whether a "right place right time" thing happens. The galaxy series took off NOT because of its design or any specific aspect of the phone itself. Samsung had a good phone in the S II, followed by a ridiculous advertising blitz of epic proportions. The S4 outsold the M7 despite being way behind in build quality, design and materials, worse UI (way slower too), worse sound, etc.

In summary, there's not much HTC can do (with the phone itself) that will really affect its sales besides advertising.

Here's the difference, the iPhone was a winner in every phase from the start, not so with the HTC series...never really gained any traction.

And I think my opinion does apply to many since it's sales are way below the others, and losing ground to the new companies.

HTC did make a series of winners though. They were the first company to make an Android smartphone, their Windows Mobile and Android skins were really popular, and they made THE flagship phone for Sprint in 2010, and they even made a few Droid labeled devices. The difference is that HTC relied or marketing from Sprint, Verizon, Google, and some in-house but that was nowhere near what Apple was (and is) doing. Apple was also still riding the success wave of the iPod whereas HTC didn't really have anything prior except some budget PCs.

They had plenty of traction for a new smartphone company but they didn't have the pre-momentum or advertising of Apple. I'm not saying the iPhone is a bad phone but there were some people who bought it because of the marketing, because it was Apple, and/or because they liked their iPod. HTC didn't have any hit like the iPod line before making their first Android smartphone and they didn't have the multi-millions of advertising money.

Their scenario is completely different from Apple's and, if they could even match a quarter of Apple's ad revenue, I have no doubt they would be selling more. Samsung is number two in the U.S. for a reason and it doesn't have to do with the design is their phones (though that does play into account a bit), it has a lot to do with them advertising more (even directly against Apple, mocking them).

Critics don't make successful phones. "Critically acclaimed" TV shows get cancelled all the time if nobody watches them. Consumers vote with their wallets and the M8 comes up short in that vote. And if the M9 is just a slightly tweaked M8 it will come up short too. Let's face it...the M8 was a nice phone no doubt, but compared to the evleaks renders, the M8 is ugly and dated. The evleaks phone would be an instant buy for me and lots of others. A slightly tweaked M8...not so much.
If it wasn't for the evleak renders though, I don't think half of us would be as "salty" over the design as we are. The fact they are moving away from an ultrapixel main camera will be enough to convert others, for me personally it was the reason why I chose the S4 over the M7. The biggest difference that evleak design would have made is that it would catch the eye of people who had no interest in HTC phones and ultimately, isn't that HTC's goal?

Completely disagree with this. Obviously advertising helps but word of mouth is huge too. How do you think youtube videos go viral? It's not because of advertising. It's because someone shows their friends who show their friends etc etc. Look...most people go to a store to buy their phones. The HTC phones are right out there on display right next to the Samsungs and the iPhones and others. It's not like they're hidden in a back room somewhere and you need a secret password to see them. If I walk into a store and see the evleaks phone sitting there, it catches my eye immediately. And I pick it up and start looking at it and probably ultimately buy it. And my friends see it and they start buying it. To think that all buying decisions are made based on a few TV commercials is overly simplistic. The One Plus One didn't advertise at all and look how fast it took off.

Might be true, but for me, I still have trouble with the black bar and a quick search on Google looking at reviews by critics and users of the M8, I'm not alone. The black bar and bezels are one of the things that turned me off to the M7 / M8. I was planning on going with the M9 and it is actually still likely that is the one I'll buy, but like others have also stated, I will look more closely at Samsung and LG now.

Completely agree with you and that black bar and huge speakers on both sides look even worse on the grey/silver model. For the most part though, the M8 was well received and critically praised for it's design and that praise is the reason why I'm interested in the HTC M9 in the first place. There will always be people underwhelmed when they leave the design the same but that evleak now feels like it's rubbing salt into the wounds. Maybe after a bad year, they'll come to their senses next year.. seeing how it took them two years to realize ultrapixel wasn't working as the main camera, maybe they're just a little slow?

Although word of mouth is still a way for info to get around, it's nowhere near what advertising, social media, and sales reps do. You can blindly walk into a worked carrier store, ask for the phone they recommend, and odds are high they'll show you either an iPhone or Samsung phone. Apple and Samsung spend far more in advertising than HTC, Lenovo, Microsoft, and BlackBerry. They also happen to be the two biggest sellers in the U.S. That is partially due to word of mouth but advertising plays a much bigger role. It's why reviews for the iPhone 6 were featured on The Verge for weeks but their review for the Moto X was quickly buried. It's why CNET has two main features for the next Galaxy S phone yet absolutely nothing for the M9. People can Google reviews for a Samsung or Apple phone and be greeted with thousands of results. They do the same with the Nexus 6 and there are fewer.

Store pushes, advertising, and mainstream tech media all equate to more sales than word of mouth and all three of those mainly point to Apple or Samsung phones.

A couple of points:

-I agree that word of mouth is important; I accounted for it when I mentioned the "right place right time" factor - that's how the it all starts, then spreads from there.
-The rest is largely advertising. People go into the store to get a "Galaxy" or iPhone. Reps push the "galaxy" or the iPhone. A phone can be designed to catch eyes, but that's only part of the equation. Again, the HTC One M8 has the best design of any Android handset, even today. The M7 had a much, much better design and was more eye-catching and unique than the GS4. It didn't matter much compared to billions in advertising, social media presence (a huge factor in "word of mouth" spread these days) and paid sales rep pushing.
-Just what are the OnePlus One sales figures?

You say the bezels are gigantic and disgusting, then you go on to say the only reason HTC gets buys is because of its looks? So which is it? Is it disgusting, or good looking enough that it gets purchased?

They already have one of the most beautiful smartphones - at least in the realm of Android phones. Looks have never been what the One series has been criticised for - it's been revered for it.

It does look great. But the point is, it isn't perfect. Those bezels and those obnoxiously large HTC logo were definitely criticized when the M8 came out, but they decided to keep it. Have you seen the S6 leaks? You can't compete with coasting on design anymore. Sure HTC can address their software and camera issues, but what set it apart from the other Android manufacturers were its design. Now, even Samsung is going the metal and "sexy" route and shaking it up with a new design.
HTC needs new marketing along with new hardware if they want to make a mark in the Android phone market.

Sales for the one plus one is less than one million.

It would be nice but don't see it happening at this point in the game.

Re: 99.99% True Leak + Bonus

Know what's really funny? They just posted a photo on their Facebook feed that says "Great design doesn't cut corners." :)

Re: 99.99% True Leak + Bonus

Could it be? The answer to everyone's dreams? A new evleaks 5.2" version for me and my progressive thinkers and a upleaks 5.0" version for I Can Be Your Hero types?

Juicy Baby... )

Thanks for that post. The leaks have had me up and down and up again, but I've honestly enjoyed it. I do hope for that 5.2" version even though it doesn't make that much sense to me. In the end, whatever HTC's plan was - they were able to get many people looking in different directions while causing quite the buzz about their device.

Re: 99.99% True Leak + Bonus

after much debate and not really wanting to finance a phone i pulled the trigger and just bought a moto e 2015 lte. its only $158 shipped and its getting great reviews, especially battery life. yes it has its flaws like a lower density display but im hearing it looks fairly well. will be able to unlock the bootloader and it should have good dev support as the og moto e did. honestly i never use the camera and rarley the flash so these aren't a big deal. worse comes to worse it can be handed down to my wife. i switch phones to much to constantly get flagships and while i want the m9 im going to wait and see what the oneplus2 is about later in the summer. guess im getting older and a bit smarter money wise.

i only use my phone for:

web
email
youtube
calls and text

so it should do me just fine for now. can't beat stock lollipop and motos great signal strength and radios.

will definitely watch the m9 reveal sunday and keep my eye on it for the future but $700+ is just too much for what i really need.

What are you talking about?

That image is a fan mockup and the M9 Plus has been rumoured since the M9 has been rumoured. This is nothing new. This is literally months-old information.

The whole premise of your posts is that HTC is 'doomed' if they release a flagship that looks the same as last years, that it looks ugly and that Apple and Samsung will out sell it.

They're not doomed, their 2015 flagship is going to be outsold by Samsung Apple irrespective of how it looks simply because Samsung and Apple spend more money on marketing than HTC are worth, and lastly, the vast majority of critics and and phone enthusiasts thought that One M8 was one of the best looking and feeling devices on the market, so clearly its looks weren't the issue.

The phones looks aren't the problem, the problem is their marketing and advertising strategy, trying to get that right so their phones sell.

You can argue all you want about how the M8 looks, but your opinion of it being ugly and feeling bad is in the minority.

Re: 99.99% True Leak + Bonus

I disagree with you completely. People view the iphone as the Mercedes, BMW, or Audi of the cell phone world. HTC has the ability to be Toyota or Honda because they make great looking phones that run smooth with timely updates and will last for awhile. Usually, Toyota and Honda outsell the high end vehicle manufacturers. HTC phones will make you come back in a few years, if not buy a new one every year. They marketed the hell out of the M8 and turned an actual profit for the first time in a long time. However, they lost out last year because people wanted a great camera in their phone. Something HTC underestimated. That was the bottom line and the reason why a lot of people did not move away from Samsung. It was the camera...duuuuh. The camera was a problem for people on the M7 and the M8.

I remember when Honda placed the best sound systems in their vehicles and included nice rims which earned them a lot of praise because those are things that will attract buyers, especially the younger crowd. So HTC came with "Beats Audio/Boom Sound" to attract buyers.

If HTC had the best product they would see numbers and a profit like back in the EVO days. They are not listening to what customers actually need/want. Is it smart to give Verizon exclusive rights to one color of phone? Maybe the Harmon/Kardon edition should have been what they sold as their flagship M8 but with a great camera? There are different avenues of approach in order to get your name out there.
