A big Nexus 6 might be a big mistake for Google

I remember first taking my HTC EVO 4G out of the box what 4 years ago and thinking that 4.3 inch screen was just too freaking big... and then over a few months I was asking for more...

Flagship devices in 2014 are in the 5 - 5.5 inch range..... I don't think the Note 4 coming out a few weeks or a month ahead of a 5.9 inch Nexus 6 is going to hurt the Nexus product much.... The Galaxy S and Note series is very similar to the iPhone in that is a very tight community of people who just keep upgrading from one to the next.... Same with the Nexus program.. a lot of people seem to just go from one Nexus to the next...

As for the Android central poll... 70% say it's too big yet when I read comments under articles about how big it's going to be it almost seems like more of a 50% say too big... 30% love it and about 20% are kind of on the fence waiting to see what it's actually like once they announce/release it.. I remember the original Note at 5.3 inches had polls with people overwhelmingly saying it was too big and they are on year/version 4 and only got bigger along the way.... Even Samsung just kind of said "Hey let's see if this sticks." and it did.....

Two years ago or possibly even less, we were probably all saying the same thing about 5" phones. I never dreamed I'd ever own one so large. Now I own the Nexus 5 and would consider the Nexus 6 at 5.9" but I'm torn.
I agree. Own the N5 and would definitely buy something a *little* bigger. I've held the G3 and that is right at my limit. And it has a very narrow bezel, something I don't think the N6 would have, given the buttons on the side instead of the back. Personally, the G2 felt the best in my hand. So I am hoping for a 5.2" N6.

No doubt we always thought the next big thing was too big, until we got used to it. I know at one time I considered 3.7" the ideal size, just a little bigger than the original iphone. But there is a limit to how much phone will fit in one hand. As I mentioned above, the LG G3 is my limit. Personally, I will not buy anything bigger so if the N6 is 5.9", I will wait for a google silver device. Perhaps the Moto X version.

Funny seeing people say the Nexus 6 is too big..

Why is that? If a 5.5" screen phone is too big why wouldn't a (rumored) 6" phone be even more too big?

I'll buy it... I really felt the G3 was very comfortable in the hand and fit well in my pockets (Both Khakis and Jeans) and the Note 3 was comfortable as well as long as you avoided a bulky case around it.... I only passed on the Note 3 and held off on a Note 4 because of Touchwiz.... I like the Nexus line and the basic direct from Google skin/launcher..... It will all depend on how well they balance this monster...

and yes there is a limit.... or I would think there would be... I've been amazed at the # of people who are out at Six Flags taking pictures and video's with their iPad (not the mini either... The full size version) Same thing at School plays and even Ranger and Cowboy games.. It's no where near even 1/2 the crowd but people do drag those big 9.7 inch screens around and use them to take picture and video's......

5.9 will feel weird and awkward holding up to my ear for those 60 minutes a month.... Might as well start holding a 2 lbs dumbbell up to my ear to get use to it....

The concept of Nexus being a developers device is long over. True with the first Nexuses but the Galaxy Nexus, N4, and N5 were all consumer oriented. Not as mainstream as Samsung but still aimed at the consumer crowd.

Can you please explain you point. Because I see no reason that your accurate at all. What I really want to see are the reasons it is NOT a developer device and what Google changed to make it less of one.

The original concept/Nexus One was a pure developers device... Every Nexus after that has been released with some kind of carrier attachment to it... Making it a retail device and more of a reference device than developer device... More of a "Hey this is our idea of what Android should be."

So no quantifiable points or reason just a strong opinion. Ok but I still disagree. Without some real points to stake your reasons for that opinion I can't see it holding even it's self up.

Relative to other Nexus devices or relative to OEM flagships? Nexus was never supposed to be a volume device.

See how that swings with the larger I phones

While you are right to bring up Apples undeniable force to change people's minds about what they think they should like. Neither of these phones are that big. Neither of them are phablet size like the Nexus 6. The iPhone 6 fits into the sweet spot with a 4.7 inch screen (same as last year's smallish Moto X) and the Plus isn't even a six inch phone so I'm not sure of your point???

On a side bet I predict that unless Apple drastically changes the design of their iWatch, consumers will awake from their fruit coma and realize it's a piece junk.

A conflicting opinion like yours doesn't make data any less true. At least most of my posts contained studies or data about the question of when a phone is too big. I'd be interested to see what what examples you have?

So maybe the very recent AC poll I posted of how 75% think a 6 inch Nexus is too big is more to your liking?

Perhaps there'll be a 4.7" Nexus 6 and a 5.5" Nexus 6+. :p

For those on Verizon the Droid Turbo looks like the real Android phone to beat them all.

5.2-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, a Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor that runs at 2.65GHz, a 19-megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM, 32GB storage.

Very wrong. The 6+ has a lot of dead space (non-screen) on the top and bottom that make it taller than the Note 4, and based on potential scaled renders, taller than the Nexus 6. It's definitely phablet-sized.

There's also lots of dead space on the iPhone 6 4.7" model, making it a considerable amount larger than the 1st-gen Moto X.

Diagonally measured display size isn't the entire size of a phone.

Love when people call it dead space, just like they did with the HTC One M8 (HTC logo area, right?).

There's stuff behind there.

And the iPhone fingerprint reader is in the home button - part of the design.
