A question about battery "up time" and "awake time"

I've read through the battery life threads and have changed many of my settings to increase my battery life. Currently I can get 8-12 hrs on light to moderate usage with calls, texts, emails, etc. But I'm sure I can get a little more life from my battery. When checking my settings, I noticed the "up time" and "awake time" are always the same. Should my awake time be shorter than up time? If so, what setting do I need to change to get the max out of my battery. Not sure if this has been previously addressed, but in my searching I could not find a good answer. Thanks in advance for all positive input and assistance

Yes, awake time should be shorter.

You know how when you install an application, you get a list of the various things that the application will do? One of those items is "Prevent phone from sleeping". My guess is that you installed a badly behaving application that's keeping the phone awake all the time. IM apps and widgets are common culprits.

Think of the phone's sleep state as a power-saving state. It's still powered on, but just performing minimal tasks. Entering the sleep state will lengthen your time spent on battery before needing to recharge. By never entering the sleep state, you're always at a high battery drain.

Up time is simply time since last boot.

Quick point of comparison: my awake time is just slightly under 50% of my uptime, though that's skewed a bit since I just recharged last night. My phone stays awake while recharging, which pushes my awake time higher than usual.

Thanks for the information. I'll take a look at my aps and see if I can find out what's keeping the phone awake. Are there any other settings that I need to look at?

I've looked at the apps that I have and found that quite a few have the "prevent phone from sleeping" listed in the system tools. Some of which are default programs that I can't delete the amazon mp3 store or the accounts and sync. Where can i go to change these settings?

Here's a complication: just because a program is listed as possibly preventing the phone from sleeping doesn't mean that it is. I'm not sure of an easy way to figure out what app might be the culprit (and of course, it may be some other issue rather than an app).

I also don't know of a way to remove a particular permission from an app.

Here's a possible thought: reboot the phone by powering it all the way down and turning it back on. This will reset your uptime and awake time clocks to 0, and it will reset your running apps back to whatever starts at boot. Don't do anything with the phone for, say, 30 minutes. Just let it sit on your table or desk with the screen off.

After the 30 minutes, check your clocks to see if the awake time is less than the uptime. If it is less, then that's a sign that an app that you normally use but haven't run yet is the cause of your always awake phone.

If the awake time is the same as your uptime, then its either an application that starts at boot or something else entirely.

A follow-up to my point of comparison. Since my earlier post showing about a 50% awake time, I've been on battery and not plugged in. My uptime advanced by about 3.5 hours. My awake time advanced by about 1 hour. That works out to a little under 30% awake time on battery.

Another thought: do you have anything that looks unusual on your battery use screen? My screen shows
- Cell standby 30%
- Wi-Fi 28%
- Phone idle 28%
- Android System 10%
- Display 4%
and I consider these numbers to be pretty typical.

Thanks for the advice...I'll give it a try when I get home from work. As for the other display, it is similar to what you have on your phone. I'll post an update with my results.

Here's an update...my up and awake times are still the same. I've gone thru my apps that were running on start up but can't figure out what's keeping the phone running.

I had the same problem a while back and only fix was factory reset. Once done no issues now for over a month. My battery life more than doubled. Back up apps on app brain as new list then will remember what ones you had. Whole process of reset, reset emails and reinstall apps took about 2 hours but am glad i did it.

Might be something completely different then. I'm not sure what typical functionality keeps the phone awake, maybe scanning for a signal. What's your percentage time without signal? If you don't know where to find that, tap on the "Cell standby" entry on your battery use page.

I guess I will have to try the hard reset. I've done that before, but that was shortly after I got my Evo. Im ususally in an area with a good signal, my percentage time without a signal is always pretty low. If there are any other suggestions out there, please share. Thanks

Not saying it is a bad app (use it all the time).
But slacker was keeping my phone awake all the time. Even using the quit option under menu, and making sure none of the sync options ect, where checked. It still kept my phone awake.

So Now I just manualy kill slacker when I am done with it.
