Accessing a phone set to USB modem with non-working touchpad

I set Samsung S8 phone to work as a USB-modem by default, not to file transfer.

Now the touchpad is broken (no reaction to touches).

When I connect the phone to a computer, it works as a USB modem and successfully shares SIM-card internet. Mice and keyboards do now work when connected through a Type-C to A adapter, simply nothing happens.

P.S. Bluetooth is on, so my external speaker gets connected if it is nearby; Wi-Fi is off, however.

Screen lock is just swipe.

Please let me know how I can copy my personal data from that phone.

Welcome to AC!
Try connecting the device to PC Smart switch and see if it will back it up the only thing is if you want restore it u would need another Samsung device

Can u switch the USB settings to files?

Yes, I was, but I could have gotten signed out, since I did not use it much.

Could there be a low-level connection option (like for flashing) for making a copy of inner drive?

Couple things to try
Log into your Samsung account here to back up data if it will allow

Try USB mouse? Or external USB drive but think it will prompt for selection

I made a Samsung cloud backup yesterday, thank you!

The backup is just 4.7 Gb, and I need WhatsApp with 2 years of messages and Gallery with "Downloads" folder. I think they are not fully included.

I wonder if one can make a backup of user data in Recovery or Download mode.

Usually in those 2 modes u can't back up anything
