Address Book Entries Missing after loading new ROM

I sync my address book to Gmail and then as I go along I add new contacts to my address book on my Thunderbolt. When I upgrade or load a new ROM, all the new contacts that I added are gone and only the original gmail contacts remain.
What am I missing? I assumed that when I add a new contact it syncs to gmail and will be there forever. But this is not the case.
Any pointers here?

So you never double checked your Gmail account to see if was actually adding the contacts to your Gmail contacts... is that what you are saying???

How did you add your new Contacts? If I open the Contacts app and click Menu > New Contact... my app will ask what Gmail account I want to add them to, or add to my Phone.

You could also export your non gmail contacts to your sdcard and then import them to your new rom that is if you have a backup of your last rom. Best bet would be to re add those contacts and make sure your saving them to Google and not the phone.
