Adjustments, tips and tricks to maximize Battery Life on Samsung Galaxy S6/edge

I wasn't sure if I should ask this here or create a new thread, but I had a few questions I hope erasat or anyone can help me understand.

I had done a factory data reset after clearing cache, and did all the tweaks on here and turned sync off of all I don't need all that.

I charged it up and when I got to 40% I charged it again. The pics above show what I am at now, I have used it more this time then last time, but I don't get a screen entry so can't check the SOT. I know i still haven't used it as much as I did my S5 in the past, but I have done more with it on the current charge, but apparently not enough for screen to show up.

Is this normal? Or do I have to have it on and use nonstop for 3 to 4 hours to get screen to come up? Or is there a way to see SOT when screen doesn't show up in the list?

Just wondering if this looks good to you guys? Thanks.

This looks great and battery life shouldn't be an issue for you.

I don't know any way through stock included software to assess screen on time other than tapping on "Screen" if it shows up in your battery stats, but a variety of third party apps should allow you to do that. The reality is that you are at nearly 43 hours off charger with 46% of your battery used, and the only apps that are showing up in your battery stats are background processes in about the proportion that you would expect for a phone in standby. Enjoy!

I had called both Samsung and Verizon when my battery on my galaxy 6 was draining overnight without being used, I am not sure which pre installed apps are considered "bloatware" as I was instructed not to disable anything samsung pre installed or it would affect the performance of my phone. Can you please advise which ones I can safely uninstall, disable, or force stop? Thank you so much!

About disabling Samsung apps that can affect performance, not totally true, it may be true if you disable something that is attached to other app and that will cause an error most likely but by experience most of Samsung stuff can be disabled without any negative effect.

Which ones? well that's definitely very personal, you can take a look at the first post and see the ones I disabled, but in reality it depends on your needs, if you are sure you won't use them just disable, the same for Google and your carrier's apps, if you don't need them, don't let them enabled and running on the background draining your battery.

About your phone draining overnight, check your battery stats and see which apps or services are the bigger offenders, if they are the normal cell Standby or Google Play Services then follow what has been suggested in this and other threads, if it's the Google Play Services, Check your locations settings and your Google Account Sync options, these are the ones that causes this drain in most cases.

Thank you for replying. It says my cell standby is at 42% and my google play services is at 10% ...my location setting is at "power saving mode".
I do not know what to do to reduce cell standby usage. I cleared cache and rebooted, don't want to do a factory reset wipe all data, unelss you tell me its' the only way to see improvement in cell standby usage. I have heard this is a bug and that a fix will soon be released. In your opinion should I wait for this or just trade back the phone and get the note 4? I really don't want to charge a brand new phone two times a day. Thanks for your help, not too tech savvy so I appreciate your patience.

Cell standby has been almost strictly related to Wifi Calling and/or VoLTE, if your carrier have them both, turn them off and only turn them on when you need them, plus turn off Scanning always available and Smart Network in Wifi settings. If you have all of those off and did the Wipe Cache Partition, then there's not to many options more to try other than do the Wipe Data/Factory Reset on Recovery mode, I know it's a pain but remember that if you get a replacement or even get another phone you will need to redo all your stuff again also, so I'd definitely do the factory reset before giving up.

One more thing, I just turn on the Location when I need it, I always turn it off when at home and at my office, no need for it then, and believe it really drains a lot the battery if you have a couple of apps and Location History turned on.

Chris....my verizon G6 is pulling cell standby 42%....did all the recom
ended fixes, but what is push service....i don't know if I caught that one... thanx

Thanks so much...followed your advice to the letter...if no better by Monday or Tuesday I will do the factory reset or return and pay restocking fee. Appreciate all your help!

From what I saw in that pdf of "tips", all I saw was to literally turn everything off.

In the application manager you have like every single app disabled? Huh?

And why would I turn off location services until needed? Doesn't anyone here actually use automated services in the background?

And not sure how 10% non-auto brightness is manageable at all. I just tried that and it looks even darker than the lowest setting in auto mode. How does anyone even look at photos properly at such a low level?

While I appreciate the suggestions, this hardly seems like the best option for a flagship phone.

All the answers for all your questions here are answered in the OP, I took the time to post the suggestions or tweak and the reason behind it, so I don't feel like interrumpting my Pacquiao Vs Mayweather fight to repeat them again.

But like I also mentioned in the OP, if you don't want to follow this suggestions, then don't do it, nobody is forcing you to, but don't come here to critize those of us that don't mind doing some tweaks to maximize the battery life. So here is an extract of that 2nd paragraph.

"I'd appreciate that if you don't like them or deep inside you know that your agenda is just to hate on any product Samsung make, or even those whose mentality is that they buy a Smartphone and they are not suppose to do anything to it or disable any features to get a good battery life, then this isn't your thread, please don't even post here and keep going to other threads. Like I read earlier today from a great post, I can leave my TV, Computer, radio or any other electronic device on all the time, but I don't, I just turn them on when I need them, that should be the mentality for those of us that bought a Galaxy S6/edge knowing it only has a 2550-2600 mAh battery on a 5.1" QHD screen, in doing so Samsung managed to build a wonderful piece of work, thin, light and beautifully, obviously it won't provide the same battery life of a phablet or a phone with a lot bigger battery, so I don't really know what miracle the people that been just complaining here were expecting."

There's nothing wrong with charging your phone every night. Why is everyone chasing a 2 day battery?

To the people getting 4+ SOT what apps and services do you have disabled? Verizon customers, under Settings -> Cellular Network, do you use Global or CDMA/LTE?

I tried disabling push services, print plugin, all the Verizon bloatware but I can't seem to get my battery above the 3.5 SOT mark. Other things I've done:
- Enabled Advanced Calling (apparently this is supposed to help with cell standby)
- Reduced sync for my accounts
- Removed Samsung account as I don't need it

I don't see how some people are achieving day long batteries when I can barely make it to night.

It's enough to drive you crazy isn't it! When I see someone who has gone 1 day 18 hrs and still has estimated 1day+ remaining I just shake my head and wonder if they have disabled everything and just let the phone sit there in deep sleep and then take a screen shot to taunt us. Doesn't have any screen time registered cuz there hasn't been any.

No offence, but this is exactly why people don't bother with Android. Does everything need to be micromanaged? What a joke. You need instructions on how to adjust your phone so that it works how it should have been working out the box

Huge Android fan BTW, don't like iOS or Windows but I like to play devil's advocate in this case

No offence taken. I think that's a valid observation. I think it is just us geeks who obsess over this stuff. Most of my family and friends are on Android devices. They don't complain about their battery life. They don't even change the default wallpaper usually. As long as the phone looks cool, they are fine. Forums like this don't really give a good picture of the average consumer.

As a geek I like "tinkering" with my devices. If I had an iPhone, believe me it would be jailbroken. I can't help it. I believe most of the people on this forum would probably feel the same.

It's all about phone usage. I think people with major battery life don't have many apps installed either. I have 90+ apps and I get around 10-12 hours of usage

Well, I have 84 Play Store Apps installed plus about 4 or 5 others installed outside the Store for around 90 and I still have the same battery life I was getting the first day and the ones I posted in the OP of this thread. When I use my Bluetooth paired with my Android Wear all day I get 5.25-5.5 hours of SoT and weekends I can easily get 6 and sometimes 6.25 hours.

Again, the trick is to keep in your phone what you really use, we can't really pretend to keep ALL the bloatware that comes with the phone plus all our apps that we usually download and use, having a lot, if not most of them running on the background using basically all available resources and hope that a phone with a 5.1" QHD display and a 2550-2600 mAh battery will give us the same battery life than other Android phones or phablets with a lot bigger Battery and some of them even without QHD and/or smaller displays. There must be a tradeoff somewhere in order to try to get some kind of handicap to really compare them. In equal conditions and without any bug affecting it, I'm sure that S6/edge should be very close to the top of the list of better efficient Android devices (And Smartphone in general) due to it's proven efficient processor, memory and display.

Location, Weather Widgets, Accounts Sync and some other Features that are turned on by default has been proven to reduce your battery life, so like I've mentioned dozens of times already, leave your Account syncing only what you use, by default Samsung and Google sync all the time to all their services, Disable or Uninstall all the Bloatware you will never use (That doesn't mean all apps, again, the ones you will never use), and those Location and Weather widgets try setting them to specific cities instead of GPS locations and if possible (AGAIN, If possible), turn Bluetooth, Wifi and Location on and off with the Quick Toggles when you really need them.

**Sorry about the Sarcasm repeating the words, but as you can see it's the same story of people complaining all the time that by removing Bloatware, Turning off Account Sync settings for the services you don't use and using Quick toggles is somehow crippling the device**

I'll put in my .02 here, if I don't need it or use a service, turn it off, it's quite simple. I generally have most of the features off like wifi, bt, gps, etc until I need it. I slow charge my phones, never let them reach below certain capacity on every prior phone i've owned for 20+ years, never charged at greater than 1/2xC or 1A max depending on battery type & capacity. I have never had to replace a Li battery, even on phone 5+ years old. Understanding battery chemistry and how the technology works goes a long way. When it comes to battery life, if there is no software bug that is causing drain, it's common sense for long and short term preservation.

cheers

I use my weather app widget. Account sync is off. At the end of the day I don't mind charging my phone. I paid full price for my phone and I plan on using it. I'm not concerned with competing with others on battery life. I just don't see why someone would even expect a phone like this to last more turn a day. It's like having a Ferrari and complaining about the gas mileage

I always charge my phones at night, it has been proven that Li ion batteries shouldn't be used past 40% if you want better battery longevity, so there's no way you can try to go for more than 24 hours without affecting the battery in the long run.

About comparing to other devices, no, I'm not doing that, people that are complaining are, I come from a Sony Xperia Z3, Note 4 and OnePlus One in the past 6 months, all known for great battery life, when I bought the S6 Edge I knew what I was getting into, so you have only 2 options, leave everything on, all the apps running, all accounts syncing and wait for a miracle hoping to get as good battery life as one of the mentioned above or do a a couple of tweaks and adjustments and help to get as much as battery life as possible, so people like me and a lot of others on this forums that use constantly more than 3 hours of SoT a day can last the whole day without even put it on a charger and still not go down the 40% mark, and when I need even more an specific day I can always put it in one of my wireless chargers and get a quick and easy charge and keep going.

I'm on my phone all day. Been off the charger since 7am. It's 5 now and I'm at 43%. Good enough for me
