*Advanced Calling 1.0

no one else has HD calling, so I cant use it. But its step towards right direction

I've had Verizon for more than a decade. I can't remember my last dropped call. That is until now. Since "upgrading" to Voice 1.0 I've had 4 dropped calls in the past two days. Same places that I always call.

This is from the Verizon FAQ Page about Advanced Calling 1.0

Will my call be handed off automatically when I move from the 3G network to the 4G LTE network and vice versa with Advanced Calling 1.0?

No, calls won’t switch between 3G and 4G LTE networks. If your call starts on the 3G network and you move to a 4G LTE coverage area, your call will continue as a 3G/CDMA call. However, if your call starts on the 4G LTE network and you move to a non-4G coverage area, your call will drop.

On Thursday when I enabled HD calling it killed my ability to make phone calls. So I went to live chat with Verizon to disable HD calling. Once verizon removed the HD calling feature my ability to make calls was restored.

On Saturday Today I decided to try again. So once again I went to the Verizonwireless website but when I tried to activate Advanced calling 1.0 (something the site allowed me to do on Thursday) I received this message:

"Feature Not Available. The selected device is not compatible with this feature. Please select a different device for compatibility."

So I called Verizon support and had the call escalated to Data Technical Support. They told me that this feature was not available on my phone. I told them that it was available and active yesterday. They then transferred me to a Motorola tech in the Phillipines. The Moto tech asked to wipe my partition cache and my desktop browser cache and then go back to the VZW advanced calling activation page. Once there I still received the same message "not available for my phone. He then asked me to do a FDR.

After I did the FDR I stilll no VoLTE in the Mobile networks section of settings on the phone and the VZW website still tells me that the feature is not available for my phone.

So once again I went into a live chat with VZW support and they then told me that Advanced calling for the DROID phones is "being worked on" and not available at this time. Here is the transcript of the chat:

Chandra: Hello Jim! I will be happy to assist you with the setup for Advanced calling 1.0. How's your day going so far?

hello: we de-activated advanced calling

hello: and I was again able to make phone calls

hello: so I thought I would try it again

hello: but today

hello: when I went to verizonwireless.com

hello: and tried to activate it againg

hello: I got this message:

hello: Feature Not Available. The selected device is not compatible with this feature. Please select a different device for compatibility. Back to My Verizon

Chandra: Ok Jim! I will check why you are having problems with the Advanced calling 1.0 and try to resolve it.

hello: Thanks Chandra

Chandra: Will this be for line ending in 1388?

Chandra: You're welcome Jim!

hello: yes that is correct 1388

Chandra: Awesome! Thanks Jim! Allow me a moment to check on the feature for you.

hello: sure

Chandra: Thanks for being patient Jim, bear with me a few more moments.

hello: take your time

hello: not a problem

Chandra: Jim can you go to Apps>Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Volte call to see if the feature is enabled.

hello: I am going to step away to put my daughter to bed

hello: oh,

hello: sure

hello: hold on

Chandra: Ok no problem Jim

hello: in Apps\settings\more\mobile networks

hello: I don't see an option/selection for VoLTE

Chandra: Yes please!

Chandra: Can you tell me what you do see?

hello: I think it has to be enabled by Verizonwireless before it will show up on my phone

hello: and I have heard that after it is enabled by verizonwireless

hello: that it can take from 1 to 24 hours to show up on my phone

Chandra: Yes I am reviewing your account to enable it on my end as well

hello: sure

hello: I will type what I see

hello: Data enabled (is checked)

hello: Global data roaming access (set to deny data roaming access)

hello: Preferred network type (set to Global)

hello: Access point Names

hello: Grayed out are Network operators and Select Network

hello: Help

hello: Network type and strength

hello: that is everything that is in the mobile networks screen

Chandra: Thanks Jim

hello: FYI - Before I started the chat I performed a Factory Default reset on my phone

Chandra: No problem! For customers wanting the the Advanced calling the feature does have to be added for free. I am having trouble adding it. I am working to fix it.

hello: hmmm

hello: we were able to add it yesterday with no problem

Chandra: I understand Jim! I don't know why its a problem today. I'm working on it.

hello: sure, take your time

Chandra: I do show you having the feature on the account yesterday. I am getting a helping hand to assist me.

hello: great

Chandra: I apologize for the trouble.

Chandra: We are still here working on it Jim

hello: please take your time

Chandra: I apologize for any inconvenience Jim. The Advanced calling feature is being worked on for the Droid devices. This is the reason you had problems yesterday and why the system will not let me add it. Its showing the date to be determine when it will be corrected.

hello: so we can't activate it at this time?

Chandra: I apologize at this time we cannot activate the feature.

hello: okay thanks

Chandra: You're welcome! Is there anything else I can assist with?

If you lose LTE while in a VoLTE call, it will drop. 3G up to LTE is OK.

I have not been able to try HD calling as no one in my contact list has HD calling. But now regular calls have plenty of static, when I turn HD off, static goes away, comes back when I turn HD back on. Any ideas what to do?

Has anyone not in the "soak" program gotten the system update that supports "Advanced Calling"? I was able to add the feature in MyVerizon for my Maxx, but when I go to "Check for System Updates" on my phone, it says "up to date". Given experience of the above poster, is it possible that they have retracted the Maxx release?

Edit: The Maxx seems to have disappeared from Shop Compatible Phones on the Verizon "Advanced Calling 1.0" page.

No, I still haven't received the update. As I said in another thread, that's ok with me; I don't need or particularly want VoLTE.

Based on that above post, yes, I'd say that Verizon probably pulled it for now.

This update is absolutely killing my battery life. Never before has my Maxx not been able to make it through a day with less than 10% battery. Last night my phone died at 10 pm. Tonight I placed it on the charger at 1030 with 3% left.

My battery life does seem marginally worse. Not all the way to "killing it" but I do have less at the end of the day than I did. Good thing the new Turbo is right around the corner.

Has anyone else noticed that when you tap on your favorites it no longer just dials your default number for them? You have to manually select the number that you want to dial, even if there is only one number? I HATE that!

Yes, painful, someone forgot to code it again. But do like the fact that the annoying wireless charger ding is replaced by a softer ding

Yep. Same here.

I love the visual voicemail that is now available for free with Volte calling. It is marvelous to just open voice mail and see your messages there and just play them like any audio recording. No more drawn out, " You have 3 new !messages and 2 old messages. Old messages will be deleted, first new message" ....yada yada yada. You just see the one you want and hit play. Quick and easy. Yay! VM is back!

I haven't had that happen since at least 2010. I've used Google Voice as my voicemail.

Visual voice mail added a free tier last July.

Like Cincybearcatfan, I've used Google Voice for VM on my phone since I had an Android phone, but I am thinking about just going with the free option, since you can't disable the Voice Mail app on the phone anymore anyway (that also started with the 4.4.4 update in July.)

Nahh, there is no way I would replace Google Voice with Visual Voice Mail - I got way to attached to the options and flexibility of Google Voice.

I'm talking about for voice mail only, because I have had many, many times in the past when it took days for me to be notified that I had an unseen VM in GV on the Maxx. I'll have to see if it's better now that it's integrated into Hangouts, but I remain skeptical.
