After 10 years I switched

TBH it shouldn't if they made it default within Android. Sure modifications can be made by others like other parts of Android but if they really wanted to get it required they could. Apple didn't go to carriers for approval to do iMessage just like WhatsApp didn't.

We know apple with carriers , but Google for some reason dont have that over carriers like apple but then you bring up a good point about WhatsApp.

Yeah it doesn't have really anything to do with the carriers since Apple's iMessage is no different then WhatsApp. Instead of the phone sending it through the carrier it sends it to Apple's server and then to the persons phone through data. To the carrier it is no different then someone sending something else through LTE. Nothing approval wise is needed from them.

Then what's the hold up on Google end?

Yeah , I guess

I mean that is the only reason I can come up with it since they aren't doing it but I can promise you it has nothing to do with carriers. If it did then Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, etc. etc. wouldn't exist since they would have to get carrier approval -- but they don't simply because it has nothing to do with them.

You know what be interesting?
Someone needs to challenge apple on their own iOS platform they have no competition . Only apple vs andriod or andriod vs andriod
Someone needs come in make iOS customizable to challenge them on their own platform.

Yeah blackberry tried and failed.

Nothing -- they just aren't doing it.
Food for thought.... Let's say Google revamped Hangouts to be the Android version of iMessage (picked HO because it was closest to iMessage at one time), and released it tomorrow. They have to also overcome any carrier branded message app (looking at you, Verizon), and an OEM version of a message app, like Samsung.

Not sure how well that will all happen now.

Unless they changed the required default apps.

Maybe. But if Google is going to go forward with Fuschia, that would be a good time to limit 3rd party messaging apps, so they could possibly have a chance against Apple.

Isn't Google and Samsung working together on a new texting format or something like that, to take over as the default messenger? I feel like I read that somewhere. Maybe that's something completely different, idk

I think you are thinking of RCS. Carriers are involved in that.. hence the extreme delay on it.

Yeah RCS takes involvement from the manufacturers and carriers. Anytime the carrier gets involved it slows everything down.

Correct me if I'm wrong , but isn't RCS supposed to be similar what I message is ?

In a way yes but through the carriers (once they agree on what profile to use). iMessage is purely Apple servers.
