After a week with the Nexus 7 I am sending it back

Is there any way to enable motion gestures to turn on the screen? I am looking for something similar to the HTC One M8

It might be possible with third party apps, but it's not possible out of the box.

It weighs 175g. That would make the device much heavier.

Somewhat similar but made by Poetic, it is quite light. I have one made by Apple for my iPad and it works great. I use a Type Cover 2 for my Surface and am in the process of buying a Poetic Smart Cover for my Nexus 7.

I agree with the original post to a certain extent. The iPad compared to the nexus wins in design and build quality. The iPad fits better in your hand or at least for me as well as it is made of aluminum making it feel very sturdy. However having originally purchased the retina mini the iPad just got way to boring. Having come from a series of iPhones the iPad was just a big iPhone. That maybe great for some but for me I left apple for the software being so bland. The only complaint I have with the nexus is the location of the power button. When it is on a table or anything it's very difficult for me to quickly glance at my notifications because of the positioning of the power button. Overall I'm glad I switched from the iPad and I love my nexus 7 and 5 :)

I too really disliked the buttons at first. Then I learned to pinch the buttons with thumb and index finger. Give that a try. It really works. The buttons actually push in at an angle towards the screen.

Sent from my 2nd Generation Nexus 7.

Yeah it's actually quite convienent the way the buttons are placed once you get used to it.

Agreed. The reason I never used the power button on the iPad is because I bought the smart cover on day one. I got my iPad as a gift and the person who gave me works at the Apple store nearby so I got a really good deal on the cover. Hence I am thinking of getting the Poetic Smart Cover for my Nexus 7 as well.

Yes, I have :(
I can live with the WiFi problem. What I can't live with is the uninspiring design. All electronic devices must be attractive, almost inviting people to use them. I don't feel like that with the Nexus 7. The opposite.

You don't want any Nexus device. They are designed to be a cost effective devices to let people experience Android in it is original form (no skins, etc) and for developers to use as a reference implementation. They are built for a different market than devices such iPad which targets higher end consumers and is kind of a pain as a development target.

The best thing about a Nexus is they are nearly impossible to brick.

Ha, ha....I got mine running a weird ROM....it took almost 4 hours but I was able to get stock 4.4.2 running on it...so yes I agree with you completely! There were about two or three times, I felt like I was about to brick it but.....same thing with my Nexus 4 as well:-)

So I have an old Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II lying around. I was wondering if I can put KitKat on it or not? Any ideas anyone?

At the end of the day I couldn't come to terms with the quality of the device. Maybe I am spoiled by Apple, or maybe I think that having an HTC One M8 is sufficient, since the screen size difference isn't that big. If I need a bigger screen, I use my Macbook Air.
I will keep an eye on the market though for a top quality (it must be on par with the iPad) Android tablet, and if one comes out I will buy it. I am not going back to the iPad as long as the OS remains so restrictive..

Try the GPE LG Gpad or wait for the new Nexus 8 to come out. I have an iPad and a Nexus 7, once they are in the case build quality is not an issue and the screen on the Nexus 7 is so much better. I just bought the LTE version of the Nexus 7 today and will put my WI-Fi version up for sale.

Also I wanted to mention that I started out on Windows 6 on a smartphone and iOS on iPod Touch 4th Gen, then iPad, then Android smartphone, followed by Windows Phone, Surface tablet and then Nexus 7. I still have all three tablets and my Nexus 4 and Lumia 810. I use the 810 for a daily driver and the Nexus 7 for my surfing, Netflix etc.

Actually, the N7 2013 is a piece of art. It just doesn't scream "look at me". Maybe I'm wrong. The screen says it.

It's a beautiful, vibrant thing.
On the subway someone always asks 'is that a mini Retina?' and I introduce them to the world of Android.

I don't know. If tablets were as thin as paper would we really talk about the backside? or the quality on the front? And what we can do with the front!

I like your background picture :)

for the battery problem, it could be due to the unused apps running in the background.

you should close all of them, then click the airport mode. after i do that at night time, there usually only about 3-4% battery drainage.
