After sms restore and confirmation from app, text messages are not there before a recent date. Using a different 3rd party app, ("SMS & CallLog Backup") and clicking on "view phone sms", I can see the old text messages in a list type view, so I know they are in there somewhere. But looking at stock or any SMS app, it looks as if I just got my phone a few days ago because only the last several days' texts are showing up. The same day I restored is the day the texts go back to. The restore file is large and the restore app shows approx. 18,000 messages to restore. The restore app takes several minutes just like it would if restore was going correctly. I am stumped. Please help.

I'm not sure about Messenger but Textra has a "resync Textra" function that I use after I restore SMS messages. It resyncs the SMS database. Usually I find something amiss but the resysnc usually corrects it. Maybe install the free version and see if that helps. It's found in settings/about.
