All audio is cutting out every few seconds, regardless of speaker type

[Android Central Question]

Using a pixel 4a (not 5g). Currently all audio everywhere is cutting out for a second, every few seconds. All audio is affected across the board; music is unusable, calls are very very poor quality (asking people to repeat their every third word), and even the Google assistant is cutting out. Happens regardless of where and how I'm trying to output the audio to. Bluetooth seems to have no effect, wired headphones and Bluetooth headphones and the phone speaker all have the same issue. I've tried everything I can think of, uninstalling apps, clean reinstalls, safe mode, factory reset even though the phone is brand new.

Can someone please help?

Does this happen in safe mode also?
