All sold out (Google only, Verizon still has them in stock)

I was able to pre-order the phone via the Play Store (the 32GB black Pixel), but the estimated delivery date was 4-5 weeks, placing it around Nov 23-25th.

But, I went onto the Project Fi website, signed up and was able to pre-order the same phone with a ship date of by Oct 24th!

Given that I'm paying full price for the phone (and up front), I'm guessing that I don't even have to activate the Project Fi service (I use T-Mobile) and can just cancel, and will have gotten the phone a lot sooner, no?

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!

I'm not certain of this. Phones purchased through Fi are supported through Fi and not Google. At least that has been my experience as a Fi member. I would recommend asking in the Project Fi forum just to make sure.

It is possible .... .... that, for US Sales, Google had a set number set aside for pre orders from Google Store, a set number set aside for pre orders from Project Fi and Verizon and Best Buy all got their own allocation - and that Verizon gets backfilled first.

Nope...

Verizon won't sell a phone to you if you do not have a VZW account.:

And why on earth would you choose one that may very well be crippled out the gate? I for one don't trust Verizon with updates.

Oh well, to each their own.

Also, do you have stock level #'s to back up your claim that Google sent most of its stock to VZW? I highly doubt you do so....:::::::::::::

I'm a verizon customer, 24 years now and I would never buy a phone from them again. You're better off waiting for restock at Google. I bought a brand new samsung galaxy S7 edge at launch from big red that failed 2 days after the return window. They tried to replace it with a refurb. At that point, I told them to close all 5 of my lines. They thought I was kidding. I wasn't. They finally gave me another brand new one. Thats why I'm changing my lines 1 at a time to Fi.

Re: All sold out

Of course VZW has stock as nobody in their right mind would order from them..

Most people still order from the carriers.. I'm assuming that is where a big chunk of Google's stock went.

I ordered a Quite Black Pixel 128gb through the Verizon website and will ship or be delivered by the 20th. The Pixel XL 128gb in both colors and the Pixel XL Really Blue are out and won't ship until 28 Oct. All other Pixels will be delivered or shipped by the 20th.

I just had an extended chat with Google Fi support. They do have a separate inventory, so some models unavailable on Google Play are available there (for example, right now the 128GB Silver Pixel XL is available there, but not on Play). I was able to confirm that I could order through them, activate service, but then could deactivate service and still use the phone with another SIM.

My thoughts were to give it a month alongside my existing phone and give it maybe 1-2GB to see how it stacks up joining Sprint and T-Mobile vs T-Mobile alone, then either migrate my service to it or cancel it and flip it to my T-Mobile SIM - not a bad test investment for $20-40, with the perk of getting a device I couldn't get now from Play and thereby also getting the free Daydream VR. A few details to those who'd consider it: You can keep your gmail account active on both, but if you use your Google Voice number on Fi (you can't get a second GV number), you would no longer get SMS/MMS messages on other devices, nor would other cell-related apps associated with it function on those other devices. Of course, should you cancel service, you can port your Fi number back to Google Voice and thereby restore it.

If you did finance it through Fi, you'd be responsible for paying off the entirety of the device cost at that time.

Not sure if you could completely avoid activating it, or if you could activate it for a day then cancel it and only be responsible for a prorated part of their $20 bill.

In either event, if you're wanting a specific configuration they have in stock that's not available on Google Play, even if you're not intending on using Fi long-term, this may be a viable option as the savings of the cost of Daydream VR (presuming you want that) would more than offset even a full month of Fi service (assuming you didn't go crazy with the data).

Now if they only had the 128GB Quite Black Pixel XL in stock... For those they are taking preorders on, they quoted a current ETA devices of 11/18, which puts it in line (though a little more specifically) with the ETA from the Play Store for its 'available' inventory.

It looks a lot better for a company when a product is sold, out of stock, and in demand, rather than having inventory sitting around collecting dust.

Being that this is Google's first launch with Pixel, they had no idea what the actual hype and demand for the product would be. This decision was likely made months ago, and Google expected Samsung's Note 7 not to falter. For a company like Google, which isn't as big as the cellular device juggernauts like Samsung and Apple, they likely wanted to have enough phones to break even and make a little profit.

Now that they see how many folks are anticipating the release of their phone not through Verizon, they'll adjust their expectations for next year, but don't expect a overproduction of phones. What would the perception be if they actually did overproduce phones?

"Oh man, Google's phone must suck. They still aren't sold out..." .... "It's probably not as good as an iPhone then. I'm going to buy an iPhone."

Eh... Folks who aren't on Verizon or who don't want to switch carriers will wait because that's probably the best (or only) option for them? (I'm on Verizon and I pre-ordered through them). Just how it is, like how Apple was exclusive for a while.
Google is a much bigger company than Samsung, ranked number two in most valuable, shameful all the pixel hate, it's just a phone

Yeah, my thinking is this. Via Project Fi, if you buy a nexus 5x on discount and don't activate service, you're responsible to pay the entire full price. As the Pixel is being sold via Project Fi for the full price (no discount), my thinking is that even if you don't ever activate the sim card, what's the worse that could happen? You will have already paid full price (especially if you pay up front vs. monthly installments).

So yeah... Was hoping to get the 128GB XL Black from Fi, but they're out of stock too. That said, just went and placed an order (not financed) for the same 32GB XL Black on Fi's page, expected delivery is October 27-31. Much faster than the late November (21-24?) ETA for the same from the Play store. I'll activate it on Fi at least for a little bit just to see how that service works, but unless I'm delighted I'll just cancel it and flip in my existing SIM and be up and running close to a month earlier, only out a couple of dollars for service used.
