Can anyone recommend, a reliable DIY system that would allow me to control my home security system via my Android phone? Getting tired of paying the ADT monthly fees and the new ADT Pulse system is outrageously priced and the monthly fee for using it, is much worse.

I think your thoughts are similar to what I considered recently.

I don't use ADT, I use a competitor, but I would also be interested to see what is available. I don't really need monitoring since I almost always have a data connection to my phone.

In my case, the system connects to the monitoring company via my internet connection... making it seem very reasonable to get a system to alert me instead of them.

For me, the times that my alarm have gone off which was twice in excess of 15 minutes, the police never came out. I had heard somewhere that these security systems are gimmicky because in reality by the time the police show up to a residential alarm call, the thieves are long gone.

I saw that there are 2 units up for consideration.

1 is my a company called Skylink. They seem to be the cheapest and most reasonable. Then there is Honeywell which makes a product called Lynx. Skylink is less than $150 and Honeywell is about $300

I've been pleased with frontpoint.com. Very up front pricing, and the ge Simon xt panels can be paired up with any ge sensors, so you can build on later with ebay purchases (I use the shock sensors on all accessible windows). Their monitoring has been quick when I've accidentally set the system off.

ADT sucked out loud when we had them come out. Very difficult to get a straight quote, and were very pushy afterwards. Plus their quote was outrageous.

I work for a competitors of ADT and got the Lynx 5100 for my parents with Honeywell Total Connect 2.0 which gives me the ability to send emails and notifications for various events. The main line though is you have to go through a dealer to get Total Connect app which is mobile.

If you want a discount in home insurance it is usually asked if you have it monitored to get it. Personally though I purchased cameras and use YAWCam
