Always Logged into Gchat

Hi
This may be a dumb question as I am really new to Android. Ever since I got an Android fun, I seem to be logged into gmail all the time, so I always show up to my friends as logged into gchat. Is there some way I can set log out of gchat on my phone, and only log in when I'm using it?

In Talk:

press the menu button
select settings (can't remember off the top of my head if you need to tap "more" then "Settings"
uncheck "automatically log in"
