Sorry for the noob question, but in my naivety i thought Android would be cleverer with regards to app usage, but i need to check.

Do you all constantly close down previously used apps that are running in the background?

I opened a couple of apps before going into work this morning, then put my phone in to standby/turned the screen off. When i came out tonight almost all my battery had gone despite the phone not being used.

Is this normal/expected behaviour? I was down to 17% after 10 hours with a whole 14 minutes of SOT.

No, don't habitually close apps, because the system will just reopen them, or open other apps automatically to occupy RAM--that's how Android works.

Your situation suggests a few possibilities, like a rogue app that is malfunctioning or poor cell signal. It would help to see more detailed battery stats. Charge up to 100%, then let it drain to 20-30% with normal usage, without charging in between. Then show us:

1. The main Settings>Battery screen.
2. The fullscreen battery graph screen (which shows Awake time and Cell Signal Strength).
3. The Screen category (to see total Screen On time).
4. The Cell Standby category, if present (to see Time Without Signal).

GMail has to be running, unless you don't want to know about emails unless you open the app. Chrome doesn't have to be running unless you're using it - that I would shut down when I finish using it. The rest are system things that always run.
