...who is hoping that the new Nexus 7 comes with a rear-facing camera? I'm a graphic designer, sometimes while I'm out and about with my iPad mini I see something that inspires me and I'll just snap it from there. I'd love to switch to a Nexus 7 but the thought of having to take out my phone every time I see something interesting bugs me. I'm hoping, though highly unlikely, that the ASUS Fonepad is (partly) the inspiration for the new Nexus 7, seeing as how similar it is to the Nexus 7. So once again, here's to hoping.

That would be nice, but if Google keeps with the same pricing model as the OG N7 I doubt it will happen. I'm hoping like you though!

Yeah, I mean I don't think there is one Nexus 7 owner who hasn't thought how much better their N7 would be if it had a rear-facing camera. Though it is a great device as is, in the long run if it would like to keep a leg up on Apple's iPad mini, they need to at least consider a rear-camera.

It wouldn't surprise me if they consider(ed) it. You're right, gotta one up the ipad mini. Resolution wise I bet it'll blow it out of the water if the N10 is anything to go by. A good rear camera would definitely compliment it though.

I really thought it was in the plans. I took the back cover off my original N7 last year when it died after the 4.1 update to see if the battery connection was loose or something. Thats when I saw it. The internal motherboard frame had an empty rear facing camera socket!! If they want all original owners to buy the next Gen as well, this would probably do it.

I have a feeling Nexus7 2 will come with rear camera

I would like that idea. I know people think that taking pictures with a tablet is "stupid." but come on, the note II is gigantic and people still take pictures with that and plus the nexus 7 is highly portable... It is convenient to have a rear facing camera. I don't want to get my phone out to simply take a picture of something when the nexus 7 is right in my hand.
For the price of what you get for the nexus 7, i guess I can't complain. Still hopeful though

I'd love to have a decent (not necessarily high end) rear camera on the next gen N7. There are, in fact, a lot of people who think having a rear camera on a tablet is silly, but I disagree.

The 7" form factor of the N7 is still comfortable enough to use for casual snapshots, and certainly a lot less awkward than an iPad or 10" Android tablet. Still, I would never take my N7 somewhere with the specific intent to take photos, but for coincidental use it would be convenient.

But that's not why I want a rear camera. Instead, I have multiple reasons that don't have to do with taking snapshots. Consider:

- make video calls more versatile when trying to show the caller a document or something other than yourself
- make it easier to scan a document or QR code or whatever
- allow the use of artificial reality views utilized by some games, as well as some astronomy and aviation apps (FlightRadar24 lets you point the camera at the sky to identify specific airplane flights - kind of hard to do with a front camera only)
- make it easier or even possible to take a picture when using some apps, like ebay, that let you take a picture from within the app to use when creating a listing (instead of taking a photo with a different device and importing it to the N7)
- allow incompatible apps to be listed as compatible with the N7 in the Play Store, because they have a requirement for a rear camera (yes, you can often download from other app stores, and developers should update their apps, but adding a rear camera fixes the problem for all)

None of these reasons are imperative, and we'll all survive without a rear camera on our Nexus 7s. Some users might never utilize a rear camera (or even the front camera) based on how they use their device. But for some of us it would be convenient, not as a substitute for that magnificent photographic instrument known as a telephone, but to supplement and enhance the usage of our beloved N7 in the ways described above.

My two reasons, exactly. ( but a micro SD slot would be more desired)

Maybe I am in the minority but I see no need for a rear facing camera on a tablet. Then again I hardly ever use the front facing camera on my phone either.

There are other things that would be more worthwhile than a rear camera...better wifi hardware (dual band), even hdmi would probably be more useful to more people. And forget about an sd card slot, not happening.

while I personally have zero desire to have a rear camera on a tablet, I can see the argument for them on a 7" device. Not on a 10" device though. That is where I find it to be silly. If the next Nexus 7 has it, great, if not, it won't bother me either.

You know, it's fun reading these threads because it's a study in sociology if nothing else. "I want a rear camera..." to "...rear cameras are a waste on a table..." to "...give me an SD slot..." or "...would rather have HDMI..." Of course, no one is right and no one is wrong including the manufacturer and branding company (Google).

But, currently, in today's universe, you will get none of these and the performance or build quality you desire and a price point of $249. Possibly something will happen (be it a rear camera or an HDMI port) but then there will be something to complain about -- the quality of the camera or MP is poor or the HDMI supports only 720P. There is a law of diminishing returns and silicon has hit a rock bottom and labor costs in China are skyrocketing as the middle class demands increase. It's fascinating to watch us, we the people, in action.

As for me, I will never buy another tablet without a rear camera. I can't scan documents using the Cam Scanner app. I can't upload and deposit checks into my banking account. I have to do all of those things from my phone. I didn't think it would be a problem at first, but now I find myself using my phone more for productivity type tasks.

For those of you with the Nexus 7 experience. Now that I finally decided on the Nexus 7, I am going to wait until mid-May to see if the 2nd generation will be announced. From your experience, 'if' a 2nd generation is announced--should a person order it thru google as soon as it is possible, or have you found that some stores get the newest model in about the same time as the ordered ones from google get delivered? I'm just thinking back to the new Kindle Fire's--expected delivery of the pre-ordered ones were delivered just a day before a person could purchase it in a store. Thanks!

Ordering through Google has its good and bad points, and it depends on your situation. There was some confusion and lack of communication on the part of Google last year after the N7 release, but I suspect they've improved their logistics and methods since then.

The advantage of buying directly from Google is that if you have a warranty problem with your device, they tend to simply send you a replacement. After receiving it, you return the old device prepaid by Google, so it's pretty simple. This is as opposed to having to send your N7 into Asus for repair if you bought it from a retailer, and the defect occurred after that store's standard return period (usually 15 to 30 days after purchase, depending on the retailer). However, if it's within that store's return period, it might be faster than dealing with a Google replacement.
