Amazon Kindle Fire $199 7-Inch Specs

As much as I want a wifi only device, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to rely so much on the cloud without 3g.

I think this device looks awesome, but it definitely poses a few problems. People are getting enticed by the $199 price, however missing the point that to really make it worth it you have to get a Prime membership, which would make it $278 in the first year, and an additonal $79 each year thereafter. Plus to rely on the cloud for nearly everything you need constant 3G or Wi-Fi to really make it tick. This would cause some people to either turn their phone into a hotspot or purchase a Mi-Wi, or something along those lines. Which only ups the overall cost of the Fire (assuming they're going the legal route and not through root or jailbreak). Now we're WELL into the $300-400 range after having it for two years. Not to mention the purchase of apps, books, shows, movies, etc.

I am actually looking at the Samsung GTab 7.0 Plus instead of this. Yes it is $400, however it won't have to rely on the cloud so much and won't force me into nearly as many purchases. It is 16GB onboard, plus is microSD ready up to 32GB, so you could get 48GB of onboard storage for $400 (assuming you already had a 32GB card). It honestly seems like the better deal in the long run. Plus it can do the same thing that the Fire can do with movies, books, etc., and you have the full Android Market.

Just my thoughts.

Hmmmm. Here's something that hadn't occurred to me. You couldn't listen to the music directly off the cloud player if you're traveling; could you? You could when you happened to hit a wi-fi spot, but otherwise ......

8GB is small, but you could download your music to the device and then delete them afterwards. It is annoying, but something had to go to get down to the 199 price. Note Amazon is losing money on each sale (how much is not publicly known, estimate are between 200-250).

Not surprising. That seems to be a common technique for them. I heard they did that with e-books when the Kindle first came out.

So as an e reader with a bonus app repository, how does this fare?

I'm hoping advanced pdf is available too. Want to upload my highlighting.

Cloud media usually has the option to stream or download to your device. Let's say a movie. Download it to your device from cloud an then when it is over put it back in the cloud so it doesn't take up space.

This sounds enticing but do I need Amazon Prime? What exactly does it do? It's discounts right?

You don't need Amazon Prime. But you wont have access to their free video streaming. Other than that, Prime gives you free 2-day shipping and discounted 1-day shipping.

Best Buy has a special going right now. Pre-Order the Fire at Best Buy and you get a $50 Best Buy Gift Card.

Do you have a link to confirm this information? I can't find anything on the Best Buy website about this deal.

Sorry but I dont have a link to show the deal but I do have a reciept to show that I got the deal. I did not know about the deal either. A best buy employee pointed it out to me while I was looking at the Kindles. You might have to call them and ask about it. I can tell you that I seen 2 other people get the same deal too. The Preorder requires $50 down and then they give you a $50 Gift card right back. The remaining $150 balance is due the day you pick up the Fire. The store I got the deal at was in Midwest City Oklahoma.

I am having old version of kindle. What about the web browsing feature in kindle fire? Is it faster than others?

So 2.3 but no market? Or what? No matter what that price tag is pretty. Im sure root and roms will come quick.

My wife wants a tab for small buisness stuff. Instead of appointmeng books, and recordable stuff. And i'm sure she'll use it at home for browsing and stuff. I wonder how these device will run with amazons ui though. Im sure she will be super happy as she is using it to replace her acer mini lol.

It is using 2.3 as the base, but it doesn't have Market because the tablet does not meet Google's standards. Amazon has their own app store.

If you want a business tablet, the Nook Tablet may be a better choice, since it will be more easily rooted and has more storage.

If will be bought around xmas time or first of year for her. The amazon app store isnt bad though, well terribly. Im sure root and cm7 should follow. Couldnt one just root and install an apk of what you need, even if no custom rom was present?

Edit. She has been scouting the amazon market anyway, anx found something she will think will be what she wants, so i'm going to try it on my ov before we jump the gun on this purchase.
