Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7" vs Asus Nexus 7 II

As Still 1 and others have mentioned with the nexus & you have access to all the apps in the Google Play store and all the apps in the Amazon App Store and can sideload apps.

With the Kindle Fire HDX you have access to the Amazon App store, and I don't believe you can side load apps. You are locked into their eco system the same way you would be locked into Apple's ecosystem if you went with an iPad mini.

I will add one thing, IF you are an amazon Prime member, Amazon currently supports Amazon streaming video for iOS devices and Kindle Devices but not Android. I consider this to be an intentional move to try and shift consumers toward the Kindle.

Totally wrong. Just as you can install the Amazon App Store on a Nexus, you can install the 1Mobile.com app store on the Kindle Fire. It has nearly every Play Store app available that you won't find on the Amazon store. Really wish people would stop spreading this myth.

The Fire OS is not bulky. It is the opposite. Unlike other skins, it is mostly removing functionality versus adding unnecessary crap. I am telling you the fire HD uses 2 year old ICS OS and a 2 year old dual core TI OMAP chip, yet it is buttery smooth. Amazon will not release a tablet that isn't as good as their prior tablet. They are all about maintaining customer loyalty.

Agreed. I was amazed when I traded my Nexus 7 for the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 how much smoother it ran.

This is the first time I have been informed of this. So I stand corrected in that that the Kindle Fire has access to more than 1 App store. I can't check out the 1mobileapp myself as my Work firewall blocks the site. I do see the Google play store has a 1mobile app https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s?id=me.onemobile.lite.android&token=k-wsxs_E in the store and the previously mentioned ability to side load the Amazon store [or any other stores] if you want which seems to me still proves the point the the Amazon ecosystem is less open than the Google Android ecosystem.

Is there any other tablet similar to the Nexus 7, but.. with 3G? That Nexus 7 LTE is too expensive right now and I could use 3G as well. I saw Hyundai T7 beats first Nexus 7. Maybe they will release new version as well?

Frankly, $350 for an LTE tablet is dang cheap. If you can find one much cheaper than that, it's probably using some pretty old hardware, so you'd be trading a lot of performance & features for connectivity. It works on 3G also, and since many carriers are converting their 3G networks to 4G, you're future-proof, even if you don't have 4G in your area right now.

At the same time, Ive read reviews and read many people saying its a laggy turd. I personally havent used it, but I havent heard great things either. In the end, theres a choice. The joys of android.

I tried the Kindle Fire HD once, and although it wasn't a laggy turd, it wasn't the smoothest thing ever. It lagged a bit when opening and closing apps. It stuttered slightly while scrolling through home screens. It wasn't bad lag, but it just didn't have a polished or smooth feel to it.

Based on the YouTube video reviews of the HDX, this no longer seems to be the case.

The 1Mobile store is also rife with fake apps and potential harmful apps.

It is good to keep in mind, though, that the Kindle lending library (collection of free books) is only available on Kindle devices. This might be enough to push an avid reader over to the Kindle over the Nexus.
With the pitiful selection of mostly self published mess, this isn't that much of a factor unless someone just wants to read anything and doesn't care. You won't find any books from the Big 6 major publishers.
Better bet is finding a local library that lends E-books via Overdrive or some other method.

yeah because Google worked its A** off to improve the performance and Amazon is doing a free ride...

Hate Amazon for that... why buy a crippled tablet when Nexus 7 is 100000 times better than fire and Amazon has prime Video as its only positive thing.

Isn't it the other way around? The big 6 major publishers will not allow their ebooks to be loaned by libraries. Their ebooks are readily available for sale on Kindle.

Very easy to weed those out by simply looking at the user reviews. If that's too much of a challenge for you, then install the GETJAR or SlideMe or Goodreaders app stores. All I'm trying to tell you is that people who have a Kindle Fire do not live this miserable existence without the apps that they want. Every Fire owner I know has the apps that they want.

You mean it's not much of a factor to YOU...just as lack of the Play Store is not much of a factor to me and other Fire users.

you clearly do not have a clue, drinking all the kool aid huh? "because Google worked its *** off to improve the performance and Amazon is "doing" a free ride"....really that is laughable. It runs a forked version of android kernel, it is not running Google Android just android....there is a difference and Android is open source, anyone is free to do this including you which is why its hilarious and sad that you "hate amazon for that"....forget the fact you shouldn't hate any company especially not for doing what companies are supposed to....unless you are just a fanboy of one. Google charges for "Google android" to be able to install the "google apps" or the gmail/youtube/calendar and other google branded apps and also to have access to the play store....thats about all. Note that because companies pay for access to play store does NOT also mean that any app in it is somehow legally off limits for other "non google" versions of android, so you are the only one hating amazon here and its unnecessary.

I'm kinda in OP shoe for a new 7" tablet, too. From a Nexus 7 2012 owner and playing with my sister-in-law Kindle Fire HD 2012.

My thoughts: I would go for HDX for game/reading/video/music/photo, media stuff cause of better and faster GPU/CPU.

I would go for Nexus 7 2013 for GPS/Navigation needs. LTE is cheaper price on HDX, though ($329.00 HDX. $349 Nexus 7 2013, plus tax).

If you can live without Google Play store, HDX is the way to go. You can sideload apps and stuff on HDX, anyway (I hope so, from my Fire HD 2012 experience).
Soon or later, HDX will be rootable/custom roms, anyway. Time will tell...

Should wait till HDX comes out and make final decision, OP. No bias opinion or fanboy, just being honest.

Is this supposed to be a distinction between an actual Kindle and the Kindle for Android app? I have a couple of hundred free Amazon Kindle books that I "purchased" on the site for $0 and for reading on my Kindle Android app. They work just fine. (A site that does a pretty good job of keeping up with them and alerting you to the newest freebies is the Kindle Buffet.)

Regarding lending specifically, I haven't specifically gotten them lent to me, or tried lending them to someone else, but there are certainly things I've "purchased" for $0 (without having a Kindle itself) that seem to say they can be lent. When I go to my account, depending on the publisher whim, of course, there are certainly free books that Amazon says that I can lend. When I click "lend this title" it says:

"Loan this book to anyone you choose. Complete the following and click Send now to loan your book. The recipient does not need a Kindle to accept this book."

That was a information page that appeared after I clicked "loan this title" on a free book currently in my library.

So, it would seem that there is no restriction on free books, reading, lending, receiving. They can still be read with the Kindle for Android app. And they can be lent or you can be a loan recipient without a Kindle device as long as you have the Android app.

If I'm missing something, please let me know.

In hardware, I really like the look of the HDX. But I just can't buy into Amazon's eco system, even though I'm a happy Amazon member. It seems like more trouble than it's worth. I'm looking at the new Samsung Galaxy note 2014. Looks pricey, but awesome.

The Lending Library is only available to Prime members, and the books available in the Lending Library can only be read on a Kindle, not in the Kindle app on a Nexus it other device. The free books in the Kindle store can be read on any device.

On a kindle its easy to use but the software is kind of limiting and you don't get Total access to the android market which is growing as I type this and it has reading apps and plus the nexus 7 screen looks really good
