Ambient Display Not Working

This is too funny. I also switched from the Moto X to the Pixel, and am already missing 2 things. #1 the size, #2 the ambient display which is MOTION ACTIVATED!!! I tried about 6 different apps trying to replicate it. Gravity Screen can help with the motion activation, but I couldn't get it to work perfectly with another notification app. If anyone figures this out, please let us all know, so we don't have to return our Pixels.

Yes, gravity is working almost perfectly. Have to have Security on screen set To None, otherwise it requires you to enter your password or pin, which really defeats the purpose of the one motion open

I think I figured out the issue with ambient display not working. When I set up the phone I did not want a pin or fingerprint scanner to unlock. I've always kept my phone unlocked. When doing this I turned off the pin on the lock screen to "none". This turned off my lock screen entirely which in fact caused ambient to not function. I went back in and turned the lock screen to "swipe" and now it's working as intended. Hope this helps with the hiccup. Just wasn't realizing what I did was frustrating lol.

Okay everyone, I think we can piece together some workarounds

The gravity app works great for flipping over your phone and turning on your screen, assuming you have no screen lock.

If you set your screen to unlock when you swipe up,as NexusShark said, along with Gravity, then here's what happens... you flip your phone over, or lifted, and it goes to your notification screen. From there you can swipe up to open your to the last screen used , or double tap on any notification.

It took some playing around with the gravity app settings to get it to work the way I wanted it to.

Also, if the phone is lying face-up, then you can wave over the proximity sensor with the gravity app to wake the phone. The only thing missing here is the 'breathe' active notification features of the Droid/Motos

I did not do anything special with gravity.... sort of glanced at settings, maybe because I had swipe already on. If I wave my hand over the screen, it turns, just need to swipe up.... Since i have not set up fingerprint scanner, it wanted me to do a pin etc.... this is a much easier way to turn on my phone. :)

Is anybody having issues with Ambient Display? My screen remains blank for notifications and screen stays dark when I pick it up. Ambient Display is on in screen settings and notifications are set to show all.
Mine seems to be working fine. The screen lights up when I get a notification for about 5 seconds then goes blank. However when I pick up the phone, the screen then lights up again allowing you to see your notifications.

This is one thing that works flawlessly on the iPhone. I wish Android can get their's to work as well.

Really? How are your settings because mine does not work

Your phone has to be in a "locked" state. If your press the power button and you are immediately taken to your home screen then it will not work. Or if you're using and app like Always On Display, it won't work. I'm using the AMOLED Always On Display and I've turned off the clock and battery indicators. I just have it set to double tap to wake up and to show any notifications. I want to see how that does with my battery.

my Moto Turbo display worked excellently with a wave of my hand. I now really really miss that feature with the Pixel... maybe I should've waited for the Turbo 3 release

I thought the update to the Turbo is the Moto Z phones. They have this feature. I had the Z Force in between the Note 7 and the Pixel XL. I do miss the Moto active display features.

Will that app show notifications without having to double tap it?

I posted a quick video today of my fix for this after reading this thread and playing around with the security settings. Its basically in security settings you change to the automatic lock timeout. Here's the YouTube link
