An Apple user's impressions of the Nexus 7 & Jelly Bean

For the record, I just put Nova Launcher on mine, and Voila........just like I figured.......auto rotate :D

I agree with the OP that the lack of auto rotation on the home screen is annoying. Glad to hear Nova works. I briefly tried Apex, but it didn't work at all. Will probably throw Nova on there and call it a day. Just hope I don't lose any other functionality.

The widget auto resizing/moving icons won't work. Neither will the swiping away of widgets to delete. What you do get is a pile more customization. I set mine to auto-rotate, and set the animation speed to "faster than light" in look and feel. This sucker is smokin' fast now. Makes my Gnex on JB look like a snail, and I have the same settings on my Gnex. :D

I don't know why but when I plugged mine into Windows 7 it found the drivers and the HD is browsable. It must be a Mac issue that prevents it from just working.

Then again, and not ragging on Apple, they are known for sabotaging other companies products.

One problem with Nova is that you can't drag icons around once they are placed. Looks like a bug. Not much of a problem because you can delete them and replace.

Had the same problem when I tried it last week, I believe it is indeed a bug.

Developers make money on iOS because of volume. The Android app story is pathetic. Choice, quality and just finding an app. Plus many fewer people actually willing to pay for an app. There are many same apps that on Android have reduced functionality and look worse.
I will only buy an Android device that is either a nexus or with an unlocked bootloader. if an iOS device doesn't do what you want then you can jailbreak. Fewer people do these days though because Apple has added features that people used to jailbreak for.
The people who complain about Apple being a closed system and Android supposedly one can generally give few examples of what is good or bad about either or how it actually affects them.
You really want to root an Android device just to get rid of the silly amount of bloatware the carriers and manufacturers install. Apple doesn't allow carriers to do this.
Android tablets are awful and haven't sold first because of few decent tablet apps, lower quality hardware, especially screens, and a poor UI. This is why Google had to take the extraordinary step of competing against their own partners in making a Nexus tablet.
Also keep in mind that the only Android manufacturer making money is Samsung. The rest are losing money. That goes a long way to explain bloatware, minimal upgrades, poor quality hardware, and service and support.
Android is mostly succeeding because of low cost phones. But revenues for everyone involved in Android, including Google, are very low compared to Apple devices, apps, and accessories.
Google makes more money from Google Services on iOS devices than from Android. That's pretty sad.
For Apple the device is the product they are selling. They break even on apps because of the cost of the app infrastructure they provide. For Google you are the product they are selling which explains why they roll over for the carriers and manufacturers to the detriment of Android users.
Your average user cares about price a lot and even though Apple easily competes price wise with the latest Android phones and tablets the latest Android devices drop in price very quickly and Apple's don't until a new version comes out.
I've had Android and iPhones since the beginning of each btw. Right now I'm using an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S III. I've used handheld devices in general long before the Palm and Windows CE handhelds.

Sorry Snookie after reading some of your previous posts, you come off as bit of a "shrill". I don't know if we/I can take you serious or not.

I think most consumers probably don't understand the whole "pure Google experience" and Googles marketing doesn't help. I got what I wanted from a Nexus, a clean slate.

The OP had a level of expectation that wasn't met based on experiences with other products. Hopefully she can make her N7 into a device she can enjoy and won't deter her from any future Android purchases.

I've noticed that.......and I found the solution (albeit a temporary one until it's fixed in the application). You have to move the icon immediately upon selecting it. If you pause even for a fraction of a second once it's been long pressed, it'll pop up with the "resize, remove" menu. Give it a shot and see what happens. I've done it on both my Gnex and my Nexus 7, and it works on both (and they're both on Jellybean....didn't have this problem on ICS).

Sorry to hear you no likey. It is like I tell my best friend who is a web programmer and Apple fanboy, Android is for people who want to customize their experience and not be stuck with the same old boring poo.

To the OP, did you receive $50 in Play Store credit for your first and third N7's?

On the first one I never even finished going all the way through set up to the point where I finished entering my Google account info. The Line of dead pixels was just that bad..

The second wouldn't even turn on.

My current one I received the same $25 credit as everyone else. I do wish however that I had the $25 credits from the first two though. Would have been nice. :)

I'm surprised you bothered with a third one.

Like I said in the original post, I needed an Android device & wanted the Nexus 7 for Jelly Bean so I could test out certain apps for the company. Besides, I had already paid for it and they had the extras at my local Game Stop that no one had pre-ordered. Had Game Stop not been able to exchange it, the outcome might have been different. :)

After a few days of use I have another major issue... there are so many apps that I use that simply "aren't compatible with this device". That is freaking absurd. Whatever other problems I have, this is looking like a deal breaker.

Bethany, I have an Imac and use a app called AirDroid to transfer files from my Mac to Android devices. You can also use Isync to transfer your Itunes library to the device, although it may be better to use Google music and stream it since there is so little storage (this is what they intended I believe).
