An Apple user's impressions of the Nexus 7 & Jelly Bean

As an Apple user who has an iPhone 4S, Macbook Air, 4 Apple TVs, and an iPad 3, I am very impressed with the Nexus 7. I am a big fan of the 7-inch form factor and have always wanted to have one in my arsenal. I have bought and returned/sold the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7, HTC Flyer, and the Kindle Fire over the past year. None of those devices did it for me and I always ended up going back to my iPad. I've had this device since Monday and its the device that comes with me to work and out and about and it's portability is great compared to my iPad 3.

I am used to Android as I used to own a Motorola Cliq, the OG Evo and the Evo 3D before I switched to the iPhone. I've always missed the widgets since I switched and I always felt I was more "productive" on my Android phones. I now have that back with the Nexus 7. It is working great as my PDA. The android OS has improved greatly since I was last on it and it seems a lot smoother and quicker. The only real problem that I have is with app compatibility. I am hoping that the compatibility will improve once the device has been out longer and the app selection. There are little quirks like the OP mentioned, but since I used to be on Android, I know the right apps to get around stuff like the lack of homescreen rotation (Apex launcher). Yes, those type of things should already be in there, but you have little items that are missing from every OS. Not a big deal as long as there is an easy way around it.

I definitely believe I will be keeping this device. I still use my iPad for some of my favorite games and a lot of my tablet use at home, but I am clocking a lot of time on the Nexus as well. I like it so much that even if Apple comes out with a 7-inch tablet, I will stick with the Nexus 7 so I can continue to get my Android fix.

The iPad 3 GPU is an insane beast.

Even so, on the GLbenchmark 2.1 Pro benchmark (general standard for how good a GPU is) on the link you posted, the Nexus 7 just about ties with it, scoring 57.8 as opposed to the IPad 3's 60.

Then it beat's the IPad 3 in BrowserMark and blows away all competition in Sunspider, scoring the best of any commercial tablet in the world. All for 200 bucks, it's just crazy.

Maybe if there was a 7 inch version with the same quality of screen (the iPad mini looks like it won't even be 720p) I'd be interested. Okay, maybe not, but at least I'd hate it less.

I have an iPad for a tablet and the Gnex for my phone so I don't really care about the differences between brands. Just wanted to comment on the screen (honestly one of the top 3 most important elements of a tablet). According to DisplayMate the Galaxy Nexus 7 has a terrific LCD by most measures (not quite up to the "new" iPad but still very good) but someone screwed up the factory calibration leading to washed out images and colors. Won't go into much detail here (that's what the below link is for) but here's to hoping that Google can fix the problem with a firmware update, or that the reviewer simply had a defective unit. The link to the overall review is below.
I will also state that the size of the Nexus 7 is what attracts me most to it but that the stability/app selection of the iPad is still far superior, which is what tends to matter to people who want something for work or just don't want to deal with crashing/freezing (something that has been an issue with every Android phone I've owned; OG Droid, Bionic, RAZR, Gnex).

I've been wondering that myself, as there are a LOT of people with the washed out screens. From the pics I've seen they look totally screwed up.

If the battery % and rotation are your only gripes about Nexus 7 then I think Google did great.

Personally, I don't see what's the big deal about shipping date, etc. Unless you need it !RIGHT NOW!, who cares? I simply placed an order and it came in withing 2-3 weeks... I don't even know how long exactly it took because it doesn't matter. Sure, a broken item in a pain to return, but I guess this was just your luck

I do have some experience with Apple products. My parents have a MacBook as well as iPhone/iPad and once in a while I have to help them out with something. All I can say is that I cannot imagine my phone/tabled without widgets and numerous keyboard options (especially Swype). IMO these are much bigger issues than a battery % and rotation (which are doable with custom SW and/or will be addressed by Google).
I'm not even going to mention customization because this is not for everyone.

Bottom line, for the price you can't get anything better.
