Android 2.2 for Fascinate

My GPS takes at most 2 minutes to lock on. I'm coming from a palm pre plus where verizon crippled the gps by only allowing vz navigator to use the agps information. So I'm extremely just to have it working...

This is becoming ridiculous. I got this particular android phone because it was released across 3 (at least) carriers, so there should be some leverage towards updates. Instead, this galaxy S is mired in total software anarchy with nothing but the safety net from end-users like the ones on this forum.

I'm incredibly disappointed in the bluetooth, the total lack of central messaging (which the storm 1 did at launch), trialware, bloatware, adware... holy crap is this what "smartphones" are becoming??

I want to nuke this whole software package from orbit and put on what I want, like we could do with the Storm 1.

I wouldn't even care about the trials, bloat, etc. if I were able to take them off. I rooted mainly so I could removed them. Not because they were causing issues, but I just got tired of them cluttering up my apps when I'm trying to find something. I feel bad for what I call "normal" users that have no idea about forums like this, or rooting, or anything else and have to put up with looking at all the bloat on their phones.

I feel the same way, i rooted mainly to remove "bloatware" at first. But now i'm loving all the cool themes and Rom's available to us. Plus Voodoo's nice when it works. :)

Have you bought a Windows PC in the last few years?

Sure you can find great hardware like we have with the Fascinate, but you'll surely find the OS bloated with spam.

If you're going to take ownership of something like a PC or a smartphone, take charge, educate yourself and make it your own.

Otherwise, enjoy the spam.

Yeah, I buy a new laptop every year and spend the first three hours removing bloatware and getting the system setup just the way I like it. Go to Add/Remove programs and the bloatware gone. Even the stuff that is installed, like a 90 day trial of anti-virus, is simple to remove. You can't do that with these phones. You are stuck.

I think if you purchase the phone off contract, you should at least be able to remove the stuff you want to.

I just format thw PC when I getvit to start fresh.

Too bad we have to root to remove all of the Verizon garbage.

So... Anyone given thought to verizon just skipping froyo and jumping us to the gingerbread level? Just my mind wondering itself into overdrive as to why we have seen nothing when the European galaxy s phones are getting it.

It takes time for the various carriers to do what they will. Not to mention each carriers' hardware is different, so each carrier has to alter the original code to fit their model.

Verizon is taking their time installing all of their bloatware. I wish Google/Samsung could just bypass Verizon and give us a de-bloated version of 2.2

I have a fascinate update, but when it downloads and gets to 10% it than says network error. Any suggestions?

Turn off wifi if you haven't already. I've found you need to be on Verizon's 3g network yo receive OTA updates.

I highly doubt that.

@Xgunther: They have done that by this week as Gingerbread will take over and rule the place. At least this is what Video HTC Gratia - HTC Nieuws | HTC nieuws keeps on telling me over and over. Gingerbread will be the name of the new Android 2.3 platform that certainly will be loved by the grey hurd. And it might surprise even you. Let's read this week about the launching of the new Android. Soon there will be phones running on 2.3 you can read all about that on Specificaties HTC 7 Surround - HTC Review | HTC Review – voor de laatste en nieuwste htc smartphone reviews

Lots of Anrdoid fun wished to all of you in the nearby and far future.

Froyo will be nice. Don't get me wrong, but Froyo isn't what i want most on the Fascinate. I need them to fix my GPS.

Yes, this. I'll wait for Froyo. But the GPS thing is ridiculous. Now, I've been on the boards defending the Fascinate's GPS. But that's because the few times I've used it (both rooted and unrooted), it worked flawlessly if I ran GPS Test for a minute first. On Friday I desperately needed it to work and it wouldn't lock on to a single satellite. I had to Google Map it the old fashioned way and read it off of my phone. Not exactly safe. :/ I want a GPS fix. Now.

For what it's worth, I gave the GPS a try this afternoon while walking the dog. I got a perfect lock within a couple of minutes under light tree cover, which I think is very good - as good as my standalone GPSes. It's odd that different people are getting such different results.

Mine worked fine until Friday. Then it wouldn't work at all. It was a clear night, and I've locked the satellite there before. I don't get it.
