I reverted to 8.0.0 after a couple of weeks with 8.1.0 beta.
I had two problems with fingerprint security, neither of which was immediately obvious.
All was fine after installing the beta; things didn't go bad until I wanted to test something and disabled my PIN+Fingerprint security. Having done what I wanted to, I then re-.enabled PIN+Fingerprint, and that is when the issues became noticeable.
A) Android Pay - No matter what I tried, from this point forward, using Android Pay became a multi-step process:
- Unlock phone with finger or PIN
- Tap phone to merchant terminal
- Android Pay opens and then immediately goes to a "Enter PIN or scan fingerprint" screen
- Enter PIN or scan finger AGAIN
- Tap phone to merchant terminal AGAIN
- Transaction processes
I tried everything to fix this - uninstalled and reinstalled Android Pay multiple times, played with security settings, etc. Finally got Google involved through chat and email; tried lots more stuff. Reverting back to 8.0.0 finally fixed this.
B) eWallet - I have been using this password manager for 10 years or more, all the way back to the PalmOS days. I was really pleased last year when they added the ability to open the password file via the fingerprint sensor instead of having to type the master password. Worked fine in 8.0.0 and then even after I installed the 8.1.0 beta.
However, after I did the disable/re-enable security thing described above, I was no longer able to enable fingerprint scanning in eWallet - each time I tried it, the app crashed. Once again, reverting back to 8.0.0 fixed this.
All in all, I think fingerprint works fine in 8.1.0 *until* you try to set it up for new apps or re-configure it *after* disabling it.
