When someone develops an app for Android, will the app always work with any version of Android or is there a cut off point?

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 and I often wonder how long it will continue to run apps from the Google Play Store.

I simply can't afford to upgrade at the moment but I still want to use all the latest apps.

Thanks for reading :)

Welcome to Android Central! Apps that are very old and that don't get updated might not be compatible with the latest Android version, but in those situations, the apps will usually get removed from the Play Store completely.

Your Z3 should be able to run the vast majority of apps available in the Play Store for quite some time.

You have at the worst kitkat operating system. The current is nougat. You should be ok for a bit. I've got kitkat on my samsung and nothing has stopped it

Almost all apps will work correct because Android has great compatibility between different android versions. If developer doesn't support your version, you will not see this app on Google Play. All other case it's mistake of developer. Regards
