Android Auto first impressions thread (and ask us anything!)

First post here on Android Central... just spoke with my installer who put in the 4100nex for me in a Subaru forester. i have galaxy s5 from verizon... installer is at pioneer for training and advised me that most verizon phones with lolipop will NOT work with Android Auto yet. They-Pioneer- seem to think its a Verizon issue, but we will see.

They promised to order and install the part at no additional charge to me whenever it came in. They wrote it on the installation docs.

Have a friend with Samsung S5 with Lollipop 5.0 and the phone only connects to Android Auto on the Pioneer 8100NEX for a split second and then doesn't work seem to be connected. Any ideas? I have a Motorola Droid Maxx with KitKat but I'm told that won't work. I'll have to wait for the upgrade from Verizon to be kicked out. Thanks in Advance.

The support page for android auto lists the Verizon s5 as incompatible with android auto for the time being. Might be the same for the other carrier versions also. Google is working with Samsung on a fix.

I have a few questions...

I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that I bought in October of 2013, so the car is just over a year old. I opted for the tech package with Nav screen and backup camera and all that jazz. Is this unit worth ripping out the factory system for?

I went to Best buy to try it out yesterday, but the worker said that it will only work in a car (Don't know if that's true or just bs). I'd really like to actually try this unit out first hand with my phone and media and see how it interacts before dropping $1000 on the unit and install. Is this possible somewhere?

That being said, I have the Note 4 on Verizon with lollipop. The posts above mention Verizon s5 problems, is that the same for the note?

How does Android Auto differ from Mirrorlink? I know it's a different interface, but is it worth the extra cost of a more expensive stereo to get?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I also have a 2013 Elantra. I'm getting the 4100nex installed this week. When it's installed, the steering wheel controls and the rear view camera will still be operational, as I was told. I've never been able to connect a Samsung phone to my car via USB. A Samsung rep told me a couple of years ago there is an issue with the MTP connection. So, as been mentioned in these forums, I'm going with an M9 for AA.

That's good that those features remain intact! Is there any stock feature that will not work by replacing the head unit?

I had wondered how AA would work with Samsung as well. Samsung uses mirror link on their devices, so that might be their way to sneakily not allow android auto to compete with mirror link since there is no way to connect their phones via USB.

However, I wonder if the nex units can read the Samsung phones through USB. I know the stock Hyundai system can't, but their system is pretty limited compared to the third party ones.

Can someone with a Samsung phone comment on whether or not it works with AA?

Does Android Auto use HDMI audio out to transmit sound to the stereo? If so, might explain why the GS6 doesn't work, apparently they left off MHL/HDMI capability. Oops.

AT&T S5 active works great with android auto! No problems with voice command activation.

Is anyone out there using the tunein radio app? I still can't get local stations. Wondering if it's the app or on my end.

I just had a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX professionally installed in my 2015 Subaru WRX. My cellphone is a Google Nexus 5 with Lollipop 5.1. And yes, the first things I did were (1) do the Pioneer firmware upgrade to 1.03, and (2) install the Android Auto app on my Nexus 5.

When I connect the phone via BT & USB, it all seems to work fine. The "APPS" icon turns into a "Android Auto" icon. The phone running the AA app seems to be properly recognized.

When I then press the icon, I get a problem message
“Android Auto cannot connect right now. When it is safe to do so, please check your Android phone.”

What is it that I must check on my phone? The BT connection works and I see the shared Google contacts. The Android Auto app is installed and running, and that infamous AA app check box is OFF.

Do you have your parking brake applied? The first time you attach your phone to the head unit to get it to do the initial setup of Android Auto, you must be parked with the brake applied.

Did the installers add a parking brake override switch?

So I'm going to pick up the 4100 this week to go along with my At&t Note 4. It seems like a parking break override and steering wheel control adapter are a must.

I saw a guy on you tube that hooked up his chromecast to the other USB port to stream Netflix. Any advice or suggestions for the best way to set it up or add to it that I am missing?

Parking brake override switch is not required. That's only needed if you want to break the law and watch videos while the car is in motion. Otherwise, your installer should connect your parking brake to the appropriate wire in the interface harness so that the head unit will be in compliance with the safety laws.

When you sit in a supercharged performance rocket (sorry, I meant "car") with manual transmission in Neutral and engine running, believe me that the parking brake is ON, tight! The problem was a stupid software one. The Android Auto app had the "Only connect to known cars" thing checked! But until the Pioneer and the cell phone have paired, there IS NO KNOWN CAR !!! So the thing refuses to get paired, because the head unit trying to pair up is as yet unknown.

It's all up and running now.
