Android Auto not working with Google Voice

Hi. I was wondering if you can help. I have a GV number. Had it for maybe 7 years. Always use it. Never a problem. Just bought brought a brand new 2017 car. Have Android auto installed on my LG G6. Navigation works, music works Google Assistant works. However I never get any txt messages on my car screen because GV doesn't work with Android Auto. It will only work if I chose to receive messages with Carrier messenger app and number. Very frustrating. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks
