Moto Droid X
I'm currently using a WinMo 6.1 device that I paid about $800 around 2.5 years ago. The company that made it has essentially disappeared not long after the release so there was never really much support for it. It has a number of problems. One, it doesn't support MicroSDHC so I'm limited to a 2GB MicroSD card. Two, it has a problem that won't let me put it in sleep mode without programs running from the MicroSD crashing. Three, the back plate is poorly designed and comes off easily so I have to handle it with extreme care. The tab that holds the back plate on separates from the back plate. I Krazy glued it a while ago and that's been holding.
Also, since buying the winmo I got married and we had a baby. My budget has changed a lot and I really don't want to spend a lot of money on another phone ($200 is still a lot of money to me even though it's well worth far more than that).
Some of the reasons the Droid X is the Android based phone I want are the following:
1. Screen DPI is Good! Not too high or too low!
My last WinMo device had a 4 inch 480x640 screen which is 200dpi. My current WinMo Phone has a 2.8" 480x640 screen which is 286dpi. The 200dpi was good, though it had kind of biggish pixels. I was very glad that I could see a ton on the screen at a time! The 286dpi was just too high. On the new phone running the exact same applications I had to set text sizes larger in order to read them easily. This means I didn't get as much usable screen real-estate out of the same screen resolution. That was very disappointing. The Droid X has 228dpi which I think will be perfect to get a sharp display with a great 480x854 resolution that should still be fully usable on that 4.3" screen. I think the Droid Incredible would still be a little too high at 252dpi.
2. It has a PowerVR graphics subsystem. The graphics subsystem of the Snapdragon based devices is nowhere close to what's in the PowerVR. If you look at video's of the original Droid running Doom 2 or whatever compared to Snapdragon based devices it's no contest.
3. I plan to use it as a GPS. The large physical dimensions of the screen will make it better as a GPS in the car for our camping trip to Maine this September.
I could go on and on about I like the 8GB of built in primary storage as well as the included 16GB MicroSDHC card and impressive things I've read about the screen and the camera but I'll stop here.
Thank you for your consideration!
