I have quite a few reasons for thinking that the Motorola X is the "hottest phone of the year". Some of them are due to my own personal views while others are based on specs:
Personal views:
1. I had always been a GSM fanboy and am now an Android fanboy. As much as I have loved the EVO 4G in my experiences playing with it, I had never considered switching carriers to actually get it. But there is something about the Motorola X that strikes me and has made me actually consider moving over to Verizon (which is perfectly fine for me in my area. Just never considered it due to my love of SIM cards

)
2. When it comes to hardware, the Motorola X just can't be beat right now. The 4.3" screen is just remarkable to me and would take my mobile media experiences to a whole new level. The 1GHz processor is an amazing thing which I enjoy a variant of in my Nexus One. But the dedicated graphics processor is sure to make enhanced gaming even better than on a dedicated gaming device (and definitely much more convenient when on the go!). Hurry up Angry Birds!!!
3. Stock Android and then some - One of the things that attracted me to my Nexus One was the fact that it ran stock Android. I do like Sense UI but LOVE Stock Android. And on top of that, Motorola has also thrown in plenty of UI customizations to enhance our experience but without deteriorating the OS. I love that.
Based on specs:
1. The only noteworthy devices out there (that I can think of) utilizing a 4.3" screen are the Motorola X, EVO 4G, and the HD2. The HD2 is plagued by Windows Mobile, the EVO 4G is great and does have a good plan to support it. But Sprint's coverage is very spotty in my area. The Motorola X gives the best of both. Amazing hardware with a great carrier and coverage to support it.
2. Promised support in the near future for Android 2.2 shows that neither Motorola nor Verizon have any intention of letting the X fall behind the curve. That makes me very happy.
3. The gorilla glass toting LCD screen is much better in sunlight. I spend a lot of my time outdoors and find that I can't even use my Nexus One many times due to loss of screen view.
4. A lot of times, I run into memory issues on my Nexus One due to available app storage space. And this is even with having moved anything to SD that has been enabled for it. But the X's 8GB of internal app storage will definitely relieve that problem.
5. The 8MP camera and 720p video recording will really help me. I have recently fallen head over heels for someone who I do not get to see often. So we communicate a lot via our phones (she uses a Samsung Moment) and the enhanced camera functionality will allow me to show her my world (myself and the world around me) with much better clarity.
These are just some of the reasons why I think I would be a perfect candidate for the Droid X. Hopefully AC agrees.
And of course, I'll be more than happy to provide a solid review of my experiences with it to share with the AC community if given that opportunity.
