Android Central's top smartphone

Yeah I can give it to the HTC One. Given the specs, reviews, debates and all the threads of proof it is hands down the over all winner. Not that the S4 is a slouch but at some point we knew it was going to happen and this time Samsung came up just a tad short.

Nice to see the effort HTC put forth! Competition is a beautiful thing.

How many posts will it take for a member to tell a moderator they're doing their job wrong?

This thread should be fun!

It's the One! The best Android phone you can buy, as of June 2013 The best Android phone you can buy, as of June 2013 | Android Central

My take:

They are obviously both awesome phones. I would say that based on all of the reviews I have read the general consensus is that the S4 has a better camera over all (except in low light conditions) but the One has better camera features. Despite the higher clock speed on the quad-core processor and DDR3 ram on the S4 I keep hearing about lag and it seems the One is a bit zippier in the sense that it does not have any lag whatsoever. They both have stunning displays...I think it's a toss-up here. For me the big difference is in the design and build materials (notice I didn't say build quality). In this area the One absolutely blows away the S4 (and every other phone with the exception of the iPhone) IMO and it was the deciding factor for me. The phone is absolutely gorgeous and the premium feel you get from metal and glass is something you will never get from plastic. If HTC can build a phone with premium materials and retail it for $549.99 then so can't Samsung and I think you will see that from them in the near future but for now it's $599.99 for plastic or $549.99 for brushed aluminum and glass...the choice was easy for me.

It is interesting, the article scores the S4 camera better overall. I haven't had a chance to use the s4 camera, but I was under the impression from some comments that the s4 camera was kind of slow to start and had some shutter lag and the gallery had issues. Can anyone comment on this?

I will say that I have seen a number of excellent photos from the S4 in the S4 forum, so it does look like it has excellent capabillites.

I am pretty thrilled with the one camera myself. It is very fast and responsive and it keeps surprising me with how good it is. After last night, I have taken over 1000 pictures with the phone in 5 weeks (and that doesn't even count the 20x shots from zoe as more than one image - they all are grouped under the same image number.)

That is crazy. I have owned nice cameras for 20 years and never took that many shots in 5 months probably, let alone 5 weeks. That number indicates just how easy, fun and rewarding the camera is to use, and as I get more familiar with it I find I am taking more pictures now than even a couple weeks ago.

If it was laggy or slow to open and use, no matter if it took marginally better pictures I doubt I would use it a fraction of what I am. Also, just think of the additional hassels (storage space, copy time, etc) of dealing with 1000 photos a month from a 13mp camera vs. a 4mp?

So I guess my comment boils down to AC rates the One the best phone even though they think the S4 has the better camera - that says a lot about the other attributes of the One. Honestly, the camera is my favorite feature of the One and is the biggest reason I bought it.

I will just leave these here as well -

I'm confident the One will be the Super Phone of 2013 even with Apple releasing the iPhone 5S and Samsung with their Galaxy Note 3.

Best of luck to HTC. The One X was billed as the top phone by sites like Engadget last year - but that didn't stop HTC from declining.

Yeah I came back to the One after having the GS4 for 2 weeks. I just like it better. Better is subjective so I really don't care what others prefer. But for me this phone is better than the S4 in the ways that matter to me.

Ask any android fanatic and they will tell you sales is not indicative of how good a device is. IPhone for example. No wait, because if the S4 is selling like hotcakes then it must be good. I'm confused too much hypocrisy on the sites lol.

Here we go...this should be a wild ride today.

Only if people make it that way.

People can say what they want in reference to my opinion, I'm going off the pros/cons of both devices. IMO at launch the HTC One came out on top with least amount of headaches and really won people over with that aluminum case & display. Plus not that I hate TW because I don't but I think we are seeing a trend in people moving over to the minimalistic approach and Sense seems to offer that.

In all honesty if you gave me my choice of which device to pick for FREE.. I would have a hard time deciding...

While sales most definitely do not indicate how well a phone performs, is indicative of a fan base, and that fan base has to have been earned, most likely from other devices that excel. Regardless of sales numbers, it is without a doubt that the s4 is also a fantastic device.

I don't disagree. My whole post was sarcasm ;)

You can't go wrong with either phone. Both have their own "things" that make it stand out. I own the HTC Inspire still and use it as a media player and love it. I have the Note 2 now and love that as well. Regardless of which one you choose, you will be getting a great device.

The "best" is always subjective based on an individual's needs/wants, so I see little value in these types of articles beyond a fan boy playground (in the comments) and a self-congratulatory sentiment to those with the phone ranked "best". Personally, I never base my purchase decisions on these types of articles (IMHO no one else should either). In fact, I've learned it's best to avoid them all together.

It doesn't matter how good a device is no one is buying it.

HTC is in slide - even when the One X was being widely praised as a top, if not, the top Android device. They're still making money but way less than they used to. I hope they can turn it around.
