Android from a Windows Mobile perspective

For the browser you can use Dolphin or get a custom rom but there does not appear to be anything for maps and Gmail

What's particularly weird to me is that Google Maps in WebOS (written by google) CAN do multi-touch, yet google's own OS's version of this app cannot. Isn't that perplexing to people?

The whole thing seems weird to me, but it must be a legal issue. If it is, why isn't it an issue for others? On another note, what happened to week 6 updates?

This is a complete rumor, but that rumor says that Apple asked Google not to support multi-touch in the US for a period of time on Android as a default, as Apple is aware that their multi-touch patents are vulnerable to challenge. I'm not sure what Apple was supposed to have given Google in return for this; perhaps it's just that they continue to feature Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search on iPhones and iPods Touch (as well as the coming iPad and the default search in Safari) by default.

I'm not sure that I believe that 100%, but I also don't believe Google when they say that they prefer not to use multi-touch but both allow it to OEMs as an option (such as on the HTC Sense Android phones in the US) and the European Nexus Ones that reportedly have multi-touch enabled.

I think there was an article about Apple thinking of switching their built in search to Bing. Unless Apple creates their own Maps or cut a deal with Yahoo Maps/Map Quest, I don't think they can get rid of Google Maps. Who wouldn't want a free map? Users will definitely find a way to get it back on the iPhone. Same goes for Youtube. A lot of people use it and will find a way to get that back. So I don't see how Apple can phase those out. So if that rumor were to be true, and those 3 features are what's keeping Google from multitouch, I'd say Google should cut their ties with Apple :)

But then again..what do I know.

Well, that doesn't really say it wasn't a legal issue. Maybe some exclusivity deal just ended. Whatever the case, it's good news that it's over. :)

I'm glad multi-touch will be the norm going forward. It makes web browsing on a phone so much easier and more enjoyable. Looks great on the N1!

When they asked in the Round Robin, I didn't think about it too much. With all the new phones coming out, there are a lot of OS versions some of which won't be upgraded. It is getting confusing without a roadmap. Are we just supposed to find out by trial and error or make sure to buy the latest and greatest specs to improve our chances of getting upgrades?

Windows Phone to Android

Transferring from Windows Phone to Android is not difficult. They offer a very similar experience. Androids Home Screens is something that you will gain, but you will loose the rom flashing ability. But when it comes to variety, and support from developers Android and WP is One in the Same.
