Android on an old laptop

I've been thinking about this for a while now. Google keeps all of my emails, contacts, and calendars stored in the cloud, which syncs up with my Sprint Hero.

I really like having all of my calendar appointments on me at all times, even reminders for when to pay bills on time.

I've been wanting to take an old laptop and run a live USB version of Android on it, flip the screen on it and hang it in my kitchen, so it would function as a live wall calendar with a few widgets on the side. I would probably remove the Hard drive and underclock to save power, run it completely off of a USB stick.

Has anyone had any success doing this sort of thing? Any tips?
