I did the DP5, but I loaded from scratch and the Gear software crashed. So went back to 8.1.

However today, just loaded 9.0 official and just tried and it all seems working. So I am not going to reload. I have the Samsung S2 3g from Verizon.

There is hope..LOL

But I thought unlocked Google phones have nothing to do with the carrier in terms of updates? No?

Carriers are always involved since they have to ensure nothing within the update borks their network. The carrier involvement most are used to is when the carrier is actually programming in modifications like they do on their branded phones such-as a T-Mobile S9+.

T-Mobile doesn't just work with the manufacturer to ensure it works with the network they actually program on the Samsung phone and make modifications to the system. Therefore once Google gives the update to a manufacturers (let's say Samsung) they then have to program the new version to work with their stuff (touchwiz). After that they pass to T-Mobile who does the whole network checks but then also has to program all their stuff on top of Android + manufacturer stuff... well .. you can see why there is a delay. Especially when some carriers remove features they don't like.

With Google here the carriers don't do all that. They work with them to ensure network stability but nothing with programming their own apps or modifying system settings -- basically like they do with Apple. Therefore the delay is minimal (if at all). Once released the carrier simply allows the OTA across the network. In theory they should all hit same time but it usually doesn't work as smoothly hence why people seeing it a little later (especially now since Google fixed the "get updates" button in Android... supposedly ... lol).

That's frustrating that I still have to wait for Tmobile even though I have an unlocked phone from Google. Argh... the waiting continues.

They download fast but install slow so people can continue to use their phone. I do wish there was an option to just tell it to go all out.
There is if you have the bootloader unlocked - download the factory image, then use Deuces Script to flash it and tell it not to wipe user data when it asks. I've been doing that for the past few months - I don't want to kill all the Magisk module settings for each update.

Yeah no unlocked bootloader for me. Mine was purchased from Verizon.

You can find some articles on new 9.0 features but it might take you a few days to get used to everything. A lot of it is pretty simple. You can enable the new gestures feature and it explains how to use gestures with the navigation bar to switch apps, open app drawer, etc.
Ok it's installed on mine. Anywhere to view all the new stuff and how to do things? This is my first Android phone so I'm not familiar with a software update

Yep, it may be similar to Apple but Apple is able to release the update at the same day to everyone irrespective of the carrier. Unfortunately, Google isn't like that. At least we can sideload or do other means to update if we can't wait for a carrier. The frustrating thing is it's a common theme that if you have a T-Mobile sim then it's guaranteed a delayed update every time. Once in a while I can understand but it's every time.
