Is there any good reason the Droid can't display these? Or some setting/viewer that can?

No. I can't think of any reason that Android doesn't support animation that all dumb phones does. Droid doesn't!

I can view them fine... I'm not sure if it's Froyo or Flash or something cooked into the custom ROM, though.

One of my pet peeves with Android as well. Looks like it might be fixed in 2.2?
