So I downloaded a 4.4 gigabyte movie on the Internet and want to transfer it to my external sd card. THERE'S NO WAY!

Android file transfer will not transfer any file bigger than 4 gigabytes!

I can't find any other way to transfer the large file to the external sd, or even move one from the internal sd to the external sd.

YIKES!

This is not an Android limitation, it's a formatting one. Your card is most likely formatted with FAT32. That will not allow files larger than 4 GB. Reformat it with exFAT32.

Tried reformatting card in device. Apparently did not give exFAT 32. Now trying on Mac.

That worked. Android file transfer still won't deal with files over 4 gigabytes. However, I can take the SD card out of the note 2 and put it in it's adapter, then put the adapter into my Mac, and download large files. Ugh!

exfat is sometimes refereed to fat 64, don't get it mixed up with fat 32.

Android File Transfer (Tool for MTP on OS X provided by Google) is limited to 4Go. This is written on the web page. THIS IS A ING STUPID LIMIT. On linux, you can bypass it.

Use of a custom recover will allow you to Mount as USB and bypass that issue.

You could use FormatFactory to convert the file format to a smaller file format such as MP4? I use this program all the time and is great. It's free and works with pretty much any file.
