Could you break that down a little for me? I'm not a developer so I'm not sure if that means I need to go to ZVD. I saw a topic about going to ZVD/ZVJ and it looked a little daunting, kind of like when I first rooted my phone. So I don't want to make a wrong step.

Zvd and zvj are sprint basebands. Zv4 5 and 9 are virgin basebands. They are firmware for the radio, the part of your phone that sends and receives data. Read up on it if you are interested, but you don't need to understand basebands to try a rom. Just make a nandroid before you flash, and you can always restore that if the new Rom does't work with your baseband.

Changing basebands is a little more complicated. You can't just make a nandroid of your old baseband. I doubt most users have or will ever change a baseband. That being said, you should probably at least figure out which baseband you have, as that can come in handy when troubleshooting sometimes.

Not at all, you don't know what level of stupidity you're dealing with. I have been good about trying to dig for answers before firing off too many already answered questions though I hope. But here's another one, if I try out 18c, do I need all the fixes or just the first one that exProphecy listed in step 4 in his post?

Just the virgin patch, but you might as well try alpha 19. It's in the op now, and kraven just posted the virgin patch 19 in his most recent reply.

From what I understand zv4, 5, and 9 are all variants of sprints zvd. If you want to use a zvj rom you will need a patch but most roms are for zvd.

This is correct. And for ZVJ roms you can either use the patch or convert to zvj firmware. (not for newbs)

Great, it's just as stable as all the VM basebands possibly more so then zv9 and I get better service/signal. The hard part was over once data was working.
