Any one casting their screen?

With the 5.0 update there is a command in Settings, Settings>Display>Cast Screen

This page at Google, https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2865484?hl=en, suggests that on most Nexus devices this command looks for nearby Chromecast devices, but on our z-ultra GPe it looks for a Miracast device. Very puzzling, if true!

I have neither a Chromecast stick nor a Miracast enabled device, so I can't explore any further. But, I sure would like to be able to cast my screen to an even larger display, especially if that works with any movie I am watching with MX Player.

My movie collection is in every imaginable format, but with the help of third party Codecs either MX or VLC will play all of them on my z-ultra screen. Casting the screen sounds a lot easier than finding a media player that understands all those formats or, worse yet, converting all my movies to yet another format.

Before I sink the big bucks into a Chromecast I'd like to know if this screen casting works. Alternatively, does it work with a Miracast enabled device?

Anyone try it, yet?

nope doesn't work with chromecast screen casting, huge let down from google considering this is GPE and supposed to be their device, just like it also took forever to be able to properly root it, they don't seem to really care about it all that much, nexus is the only baby they have and take care of, good thing the new one comes respectably close in size, no need to put up with this one anymore.

Another system update arrived last week - still calls itself 5.1. The build is now LMY47D.

Screen casting to my Chromecast now works a treat!

Settings > Display > Cast Screen > select the device and away you go!

I am using the Cast Screen function from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S thru a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter.
The 58" TV screen has 3" back bars on each side (the image is horizontally compressed), the sound lags behind the picture by about a hald second or more, there is occasional juddering, and twice, my Tab S has locked up. While mirroring, screen on the Tab S is sized properly but the same sound sync and occasional juddring are as they appear on the TV. The MWDA work flawslessly tith my Windows 8.1 laptop.

My Android Version is 5.0.2 Build LRX22G.T800xxu1bOE3. The last digits reference the Tab S model number which is T800NT....
I tried to update (Auto Update is checked) but a message says I the OS is up to date. Hopefully I will be receiving an update soon.

What devices are you using?

MWDA is the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter dongle which receives the screen info from the tablet (WIDI) and displays it on the TV via an HDMI port.

But doesn't the screencasting function do that? Send the screen info to the Chromecast for display via a HDMI port? IOW, isn't that a redundant function when using screencasting and the Chromecast? And if used at he same time possibly the cause of:

Am I just being thick-headed and missing something obvious?

You're getting 2 posts mixed up. One refers to Chromecast, mine to the Microsoft Display adapter. They are not used together. The Microsoft device is a "dumb" device in that all it does is mirror the screen of the tablet or PC onto the TV.

Yesterday, I discovered that the tablet aspect ratio 16:10 vs 16:9 on the TV - which explains the black bars. Dumb mirroring devices do not adjust the tablet's aspect ratio to fill the TV screen as casting devices, such as Chromecast, do. However some android apps will resize their output so that it will fill the screen even with a mirroring device such as the MWDA.

For some unknown reason, my other problems have disappeared (for now).
